Meta is under pressure to explain why it cancelled a major contract with a company it was using to train AI, shortly after some of its Kenya-based workers alleged they had to view graphic content captured by Meta smart glasses.

In February, workers at the company, Sama, told two Swedish newspapers they had witnessed glasses users going to the toilet, and having sex.

Less than two months later, Meta ended its contract with Sama, which Sama said would result in 1,108 workers being made redundant.

What kind of idiot wears meta glasses?

Furthermore, what kind of idiot wears meta glasses while peeing or having sex?

[–] Witchfire@lemmy.world 7 points 5 days ago

Anyone who buys a set of those is a predator

What kind of idiot? A bunch of morons on TikTok who make content either harassing strangers and setting people up for legal and social issues, or who post creep shots of women for their TikTok baby followers.

Well hopefully they all get blackmailed by a group of recently-laid-off Kenyans.

Someone who wants trun by turn directions more conveniently that airpods or something. Let's you have situational awareness while driving. If they weren't Meta I'd consider some for prompting me about people's names I forget names 5seconds after hearing them. Or people like me who can't consistently distinguish faces, hence the facial recognition witha a database of names would be useful. I could also see them a preferable to a go pro or something when trying to capture and share a pov video while say working on a car or something.

If you were doing that, it would be easy to forget sometimes that you need to turn them off or take them off before private activities. Especially if you need glasses.

Fuck Meta, won't buy their glasses, but absolutely would buy a similar product if I could run it through my servers.

You're claiming that having a tiny projector screen an inch from your eyeballs increases situational awareness while driving? That's a wild take.

Turn by turn directions? You can already get that on your phone. You don't need airpods. In fact, if you have earbuds in while you're driving, you're a danger to everyone around you.

Also, if you're wearing glasses that identify my name via facial recognition and store all that shit even in your own server, and you look at me with those glasses on, I'm fucking breaking them. You forfeited your sole ownership of them when you stole my likeness without my consent.

At least with go pro, everyone can clearly see when you have one on, and people don't typically wear them in casual situations. Mountain biking or scuba diving, sure. But not at a cafe or a town hall.

Anyone who wears that shit deserves to be blackmailed when they forget to take them off before their private activities.

I'm banned from the Technology community, so I couldn't post the updated, easier-to-parse headline there:

Meta in row after workers who say they saw smart glasses users having sex lose jobs

[–] WhyJiffie@sh.itjust.works 5 points 5 days ago (1 children)

really this is the better version??

[–] AmidFuror@fedia.io 1 points 5 days ago

It's also awkward, but it explains right away what happened and doesn't use the ambiguous "smart glasses films."

[–] girlfreddy@lemmy.ca 4 points 6 days ago

Thanks. I've updated it now.

[–] bunkyprewster@startrek.website 6 points 6 days ago (2 children)

I would have thought they'd take their glasses off.

So... Meta don't address the privacy issues. They just move away from the tattle-tales.
