It has been for decades now. Literally nothing new except several news agencies deciding to write articles about it. This is clickbait.

People need to know this.

I would like to take a moment to remind everyone that Paypal and Venmo (also owned by Paypal) are not FDIC insured.

They can, and will, seize your funds for any reason.

There is no fucking guarantee that your "donation" will go to the fed.

That's just voluntary taxes. Which is hilarious because we all know the only people paying into that are the same crowd that bitch about taxes.

Either that or it's just another way to bribe Trump and they have no intentions of using that money to pay off the debt.

Edit: I did the math and if every American in the entire country donated $50,000 it would still only cover about half of the debt. At the average yearly salary it would take one person over 700,000,000 years to pay it off themselves.

Unfortunate? Yes! Accurate? Also yes!

[–] DarrinBrunner@lemmy.world 22 points 1 week ago

I'm sure Musk and Bezos will be donating generously.

Despite the new digital payment options, donations average only about $120,000 a month. This is minuscule compared to the $88 billion in monthly interest payments alone.

Ayyy lmao

What is wrong with these people's brains? Even if it's just 1200 people giving like $100, they could make at least some kind of positive impact with local action instead of putting it into a government black hole.

To be fair to the USA, Germany has been accepting donations for decades now, I believe about 1-5 million euros annually.

[–] marcos@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (2 children)

I imagine the German government has a bank account.

[–] RidderSport@feddit.org 3 points 6 days ago

Yes, bank transfers are the norm in Europe. Government bodies rarely even offer paypal.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 2 points 6 days ago (1 children)

deustche bank most likely.

[–] RidderSport@feddit.org 2 points 6 days ago

They usually use state-owned banks

[–] pelespirit@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 week ago

If they taxed the billionaires in the USA even half what they did 60 years ago, this wouldn't even be a whisper of a thing.

[–] crandlecan@mander.xyz 3 points 1 week ago

This is real? 😂😂😂😂

[–] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 9 points 1 week ago

He can’t just humiliate us normally, he has to find new ways to do it.

[–] fizzle@quokk.au 7 points 1 week ago

This is truly the dumbest thing on sp many levels.

Its not like there's a loan like a home loan that needs to be paid off.

[–] Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

C’mon guys! We just need to donate our entire GDP for eighteen months and we’ll be out of debt!

[–] Mynameisallen@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 week ago

God I hate it here

[–] tonyn@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 week ago

If they post a leaderboard this may just have the intended effect.
