in 2026 NO 21+ ADULT should get a second look for possessing cannabis.
Come at me.
A community for discussing events around the World
Rule 1: posts have the following requirements:
Rule 2: Do not copy the entire article into your post. The key points in 1-2 paragraphs is allowed (even encouraged!), but large segments of articles posted in the body will result in the post being removed. If you have to stop and think "Is this fair use?", it probably isn't. Archive links, especially the ones created on link submission, are absolutely allowed but those that avoid paywalls are not.
Rule 3: Opinions articles, or Articles based on misinformation/propaganda may be removed.
Rule 4: Posts or comments that are homophobic, transphobic, racist, sexist, anti-religious, or ableist will be removed. “Ironic” prejudice is just prejudiced.
Posts and comments must abide by the lemmy.world terms of service UPDATED AS OF OCTOBER 19 2025
Rule 5: Keep it civil. It's OK to say the subject of an article is behaving like a (pejorative, pejorative). It's NOT OK to say another USER is (pejorative). Strong language is fine, just not directed at other members. Engage in good-faith and with respect! This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban.
Similarly, if you see posts along these lines, do not engage. Report them, block them, and live a happier life than they do. We see too many slapfights that boil down to "Mom! He's bugging me!" and "I'm not touching you!" Going forward, slapfights will result in removed comments and temp bans to cool off.
Rule 6: Memes, spam, other low effort posting, reposts, misinformation, advocating violence, off-topic, trolling, offensive, regarding the moderators or meta in content may be removed at any time.
Rule 7: We didn't USED to need a rule about how many posts one could make in a day, then someone posted NINETEEN articles in a single day. Not comments, FULL ARTICLES. If you're posting more than say, 10 or so, consider going outside and touching grass. We reserve the right to limit over-posting so a single user does not dominate the front page.
We ask that the users report any comment or post that violate the rules, to use critical thinking when reading, posting or commenting. Users that post off-topic spam, advocate violence, have multiple comments or posts removed, weaponize reports or violate the code of conduct will be banned.
All posts and comments will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This means that some content that violates the rules may be allowed, while other content that does not violate the rules may be removed. The moderators retain the right to remove any content and ban users.

Wait, its smell not like, fucked that one up.
Signs point to 'yes'
No they come for the food and get molested by him
...way to make it weird dude
It's just candy, bro
But not combined right....
I eat those groceries like ass
Don't think you'll meet much resistance on this website...
Either way I'm glad I said it.
This is a different country with different cultural values
Cultural values that strip people of their freedom for something as harmless as cannabis possession don't deserve respect.
On what basis?
Violating human rights is more harmful than cannabis usage/distribution/transport?
Which human rights were violated?
The right to do whatever the fuck I want with my body.
Nobody expects the kush-toting meth monks!

From a quick check, their anti-cannabis laws seems to be not really that old as far as culture goes (and might be related to British colonization, also tied at the hip with opium)
Also:
For recreational usage cannabis is not legal. However, cannabis plays a major role in the traditional culture of the island, with the specific Sinhalese or Sanskrit names virapati (“hero-leaved”), capta (“light-hearted”), ananda (“bliss”), trilok kamaya (“desired in three worlds”) and harshini (“the rejoicers”) indicating its various properties, such as inducing euphoria and heightening sexual energy.
That said, the amount here in this specific case (along with related monk-drug headlines) seems excessive to the point where I wonder if it was a trade/running/money thing.
If it were legal and solely for their own use it would be much better for them to grow and process their own plants (and consume without combustion).
~~Thailand was very famously not colonised~~
It was Sri Lanka, oops
They were arrested in Sri Lanka though.
Their cultural values are wrong.
Chapell Roan fan?
By what measure?
By measure of making someones life worse for a victimless crime.
The monks were mostly young students from temples across Sri Lanka and had been on a holiday sponsored by a businessman
Maybe put a travel flag on that business man...
You can't spell "enlightenment" without weed.
People are aware cannabis isn't a narcotic right!?
legally classified as a narcotic under strict drug control laws, such as the UN Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs
Ah I see, thanks
Depends on the location. Some places send you emails for discount days, other countries execute you.
People are. But governments are too busy taking bribes from pharmaceutical companies.
"242 pounds of powerful cannabis, officials said."
Lmfao Asian countries are so crazy with the reefer madness mindset. Go after all the meth that runs rampant and maybe if you let people smoke pot and controlled it you wouldn't have so many people on meth.
But nah, keep going after that super scary powerful cannabis that's never killed anyone because it isn't lethal.
Idk, most Asian meth use oral, which isn't all that different than almost everyone I know being on Adderall.
La di da
What is powerful cannabis and how does it differ from powerless cannabis?
This is cultural erasure!
