This show pissed me off when they tried to make that one guy fighting for liberation look like an extremist.

I think they're talking about Jet here. But there sure is a pattern in this show of the oppressed fighting back against their oppressors going "too far" soviet-hmm

Actually, attacking those settlers makes you just as bad as the racist invading army.

[–] marxisthayaca@hexbear.net 5 points 4 days ago (2 children)

he did want to blow up a dam and kill civilians :/

[–] Robert_Kennedy_Jr@hexbear.net 13 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Thankfully they were trying to do something irredeemably evil or the audience might be inclined to agree with them.

Presumably there's an actual resistance movement that's engaging with the fire nation militarily and not just targeting random civilian infrastructure. Whatever Sokka and Katara's dad is doing between appearances. We just don't see it because kids show.

[–] stink@hexbear.net 3 points 3 days ago

Didn't they also try to chalk the invading fire army settling on the land as civilians, too? Like respectfully I kinda don't care if your family gets mogged by a rocket fired from Hezbollah, you're kinda breaking international law?

Zuko really went from

Growing up, we were taught that the Fire Nation was the greatest civilization in history. And somehow, the War was our way of sharing our greatness with the rest of the world. What an amazing lie that was.

To

Hey we improved it, they have it better than before we came here, what do you want from me?

I know this is PURE copium, but as far as I’m concerned. Anything beyond the final episode is non-canon.

Yeah for the most part, the comics are really bad. I just stick to the show(s) and the new movie.

Really did follow the lib trajectory of understanding the evils of the world until he became a part of the entrenched power structure and then suddenly it all became very "complicated" to end oppression.

Can you explain? I don’t remember Korra siding with settlers but it’s a long time since I watched her.

[–] BimboChristmas@hexbear.net 8 points 4 days ago (1 children)

At least season 1, 3, and 4 the villains are just a different flavor of leftist strawman.

Idk about season 2 it was really bad and I don't remember it.

[–] Damarcusart@hexbear.net 1 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Season 4 isn't a leftist strawman, she's a Fascist, and you're supposed to sympathise with her because things were tough for her growing up you see and she just wants to make the world a better place.

[–] 30_to_50_Feral_PAWGs@hexbear.net 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

She's absolutely a lib wet dream "red fash tankie" strawman mish-mash of Mao, Stalin, and Kim

[–] Damarcusart@hexbear.net 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Oh sure, she's a liberals understanding of a fascist, which is just horseshoe theory, but she's also the only one of these villains who gets humanised and whose actions are portrayed as "unfortunately too far" she doesn't go "mask off" like all the others and turned out to be evil all along, she is always portrayed as "misguided" when the others were just portrayed as "evil manipulators tricking the masses"

It isn't an accurate depiction of a fascist, because Avatar was made by libs, who don't understand fascism beyond vague "authoritarianism" but I think it is telling that the only (vaguely) fascist coded villain is also the only one who the show depicts positively in any way.

Here's a good video on it (their whole analysis of the series is good, and I'd recommend the whole thing if you have the time/care enough to watch it): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RGX2rRAlNME

I found a YouTube link in your comment. Here are links to the same video on alternative frontends that protect your privacy:

At least they seem to be going with a One State solution? Or, it looks like it with this panel lol.

EDIT: Oh, just saw the second panel you put in with the post body. Ouch. Be better Zuko.

[–] Evilsandwichman@hexbear.net 14 points 4 days ago

Oh come now, I'm sure Zuko would feel the same way if the relationship was reversed, I'm sure he wouldn't take it personally if the fire nation citizens were expected to serve the earth nation people because 'it's better than it was 100 years ago'

[–] Lurker123@hexbear.net 12 points 4 days ago

That is canonically what happens, with the earth and fire benders coming together and reorienting the class structure such that benders are superior to nonbenders. This is further explored in LoK before being handwaved away at the end of the first season (which is generally how each season goes, there is an interesting premise which is explored before being completely abandoned with some plot convenience that doesn’t actually address the underlying issue or premise and doesn’t make sense as a resolution if you think about it)
