What an absolutely incredible feat. It was not that long ago that Eliud Kipchoge beat the 2 hour mark only thanks to a specially-chosen dead-straight course, a dedicated and rotating team of elite runners as pacers spaces to give maximum drafting benefit, and people handing him fuel where he is without leaving his line, rather than needing to go pick it up from a table or volunteer.

To have beaten the mark in official marathon conditions—and for not just one but two runners to have done that—is just stunning. I don't have the words to express how I feel right now. Amazing!

Unless I'm mathing incorrectly, 26.2 miles in 119.5 min is a 4:34 mile pace.

The thought of doing even one mile anywhere close to that pace sounds impossible to my brain. Let alone 26.2.

At my absolute most nimble I could maybe have come somewhere close to that pace for a 100 yd dash before tripping and falling flat on my face

It's a 2:51 pace. Or 1:08 laps of a standard track.

Back when Kipchoge beat the 2 hour mark in his non-competitive attempt I went out after it was over and gave it a go. I made it one lap before I was absolutely beat. With serious training aimed at that goal, I reckon I could last 1k, maybe. But the full 42.195 km of a marathon? Even a 2:30 marathon is insane.

I'm not even into running or the sport at all and I find this super interesting as well as crazy. How much further can anyone improve at this point.

Speed-wise it seems to be the around the upper limit, the difference between record-pace for 10k, HM and FM is surprisingly small. They seem to mostly be pushing the duration that they can maintain these speeds.
