As far as I'm concerned, anyone who travels from Europe is a complete idiot. I'm thinking about including the teams in that definition too.

[–] TryingToBeGood@reddthat.com 44 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

oh yeah, no one should be coming to the US right now.

[–] ptu@sopuli.xyz 7 points 1 week ago

The Finnish team is doing it’s part and not coming

[–] Noodle07@lemmy.world 5 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

But I want to see a friend :(

Hehe I wish, but they're sick so I'll try

[–] HellsBelle@sh.itjust.works 8 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Tbh it'll all depend on the colour of your skin. If you're white it will probably be ok. Anything else will mark you for arrest and/or deportation.

Please be safe.

[–] merc@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 week ago (2 children)

White, straight-presenting, not obviously something other than christian, and are doing a very standard business trip or holiday trip: you're probably ok.

Anything else and the risk goes up. Even something like taking a trip that starts in Seattle, goes up to Vancouver and then comes back via Canadian flights might be suspicious enough to cause problems.

Probably 99% of the people who go to the World Cup will be fine. Even the ones who are non-white, or are obviously muslim or something. But, I'm positive that with the thousands of people making the trip, there will be tens, maybe hundreds who the Palantir AI and/or racist ICE identify as suspicious, and they will be hit with real trouble.

I have 2 muslim friends who travel to the US at least once a month for business. Obvious visible minorities, obvious muslims.

I cant fathom how they have the confidence to do this but anecdotally, they've never had an issue. It's definitely one of those, high damage, low probability things in terms of risk management.

Probably 99% of the people who go to the World Cup will be fine.

Brazil has a huge Football (USA Soccer) scene and makes up a large percentage of World Cup tourism. Being dark-skinned Hispanics, they are exactly who ICE targets.

[–] merc@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Yep. They're also typically loud and expressive, not quiet and submissive. So, if they encounter ICE they're not likely to just play nice and deescalate.

I can't imagine this World Cup happening without at least a dozen Brazilians disappearing into ICE detention.

A dozen will be an understatement. The tournament games span over a week. I think 100 is a closer figure, if FIFA doesn't get their wish of ICE going on 'vacation'.

tangent on above comment's wordingOFC I fully defend Brazilians or anyone profiled by ICE being "not quiet and submissive". I just want to clarify that because the wording of your comment made me think of how people of color in social and workplace events are more often branded with negative terms than white male counterparts.

[–] Noodle07@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

I'm white as fuck 👌

[–] Iusedtobeanalien@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

Come to America

Hand your social media content to the worst people in the world

It's cool. FIFA already declared things peaceful.

[–] danc4498@lemmy.world -1 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

Do you expect Qatar World Cup and US (North America) World Cup to be much different?

[–] UncleArthur@lemmy.world 12 points 2 weeks ago

I wouldn't have gone to that one either.

[–] merc@sh.itjust.works 7 points 1 week ago

IMO the Qatar one was safer. Qatar is a country that wants to be seen as a tourist destination. I'm sure there was a concerted effort to look as good as possible during the world cup. I imagine that during the World Cup the police were instructed to be even more lenient towards tourists breaking the rules because they knew that there was a ton of media in the country, and they wanted that media to tell a story that Qatar was a great place to visit, to live, or to set up a company.

The Trump admin cares a lot more about satisfying their base when it comes to cracking down on "immigrants" than it cares about tourism. Tourists are definitely still a valid target.

Absolutely, what comparison could you make??

[–] Malyca@lemmy.zip 52 points 2 weeks ago

Seriously, don't come here. Whatever you've heard, it's worse

[–] MrNesser@lemmy.world 34 points 2 weeks ago (4 children)

Cost of traveling to the US + cost of attending a match = at least 5k to start

[–] Cosmonauticus@lemmy.world 10 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Global football has been trending this way anyway. The US is just more obvious about it. Transfer fees are in the hundreds of millions and they're constantly raising ticket prices for matches. This is kinda what happens when theres no real consequences for FIFA

[–] merc@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 week ago

Also, it reflects what people are willing to pay for a once in a lifetime experience.

I used to be that the ticket prices were high but reasonable. FIFA didn't want the bad press for charging higher prices. Now, they're willing to squeeze fans for every fraction of a cent possible and leave those fans angry and upset. They know people will grumble, but they'll still pay. Their reputation is so bad that it can't really get any worse, so why not gouge fans as much as possible.

[–] tidderuuf@lemmy.world 8 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (2 children)

That and the fear of Trump Nazi Goons doesn't appear to be putting a dent in those coming to the cup. At least in the Seattle area, AirBnBs and other rentals are selling quick. The city and AirBnB put out some incentives for full house rentals and those sold out immediately.

I think the more realistic number of people not going are probably those who were on the fence or who usually can't afford it which is like a slim fraction of a percent of the would be travellers who range in the several hundred thousands currently planning to go.

[–] TryingToBeGood@reddthat.com 5 points 2 weeks ago

Possible that those folks are from the U.S.....

[–] MrNesser@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago

There's probably more domestic travel than international especially from europe.

[–] ZoteTheMighty@lemmy.zip 5 points 1 week ago

It's somehow cheaper to attend a Formula 1 race than it is to watch a soccer game. Formula 1 became famous for being one of the richest, most exclusive sports there is, and soccer became famous as the sport that's so cheap, anyone can become involved.

[–] stumu415@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 week ago

This the cost for a world cup match or a WWE event where you can yeet for 15 minutes?

[–] neuracnu@lemmy.blahaj.zone 16 points 2 weeks ago

Yeah. The bar down the street will have the game on the TVs and they'll bring me all the beer and tots I ask for. I'm good.

[–] Wispy2891@lemmy.world 10 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Is it real? Fans didn't skip Russia 2018 or Qatar 2022, they're used to the world cup to be held in authoritarian countries and they're going to be excited about KSA 2034

[–] BorgDrone@feddit.nl 12 points 1 week ago

There is a difference though. During Russia 2018 and Quatar 2022 the local authorities were smart enough not to bother the tourists visiting for the world cup. Do you think the ICE goons will be the same when the VP has already threatened the visitors to the WC ?

[–] RagingRobot@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago

Some is not enough

[–] resipsaloquitur@lemmy.cafe 7 points 2 weeks ago

Oh no how unfortunate.

[–] W3dd1e@lemmy.zip 4 points 1 week ago

Can polymarket bet how many World Cup visitors will be detained or killed by ICE? God damn the world is grim.

[–] zd9@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

The World Cup is gonna be such a shitshow. I'm also assuming there's going to be some kind of terrorist attack from Iran. The WC is like a prime target, so I'm staying far away from any of those areas.

Fuck Trump and his whole team, may they get what they deserve.

I really hope fear of a terrorist attack shuts the event down. Not an actual terrorist attack—I don't want ordinary civilians to die—but if Iran purposely "leaks" plans to bomb the stadium to the media, I hope that might wreck the World Cup attendance; or even better, get teams to pull out.

[–] AA5B@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

Should not be a surprise to anyone

… and yet those ticket prices won’t come down. You have to be a serious fan to pay those prices, or only the wealthy

[–] LodeMike@lemmy.today 2 points 2 weeks ago

Quite a lead time in CNN news articles, it seems

[–] Taleya@aussie.zone 2 points 1 week ago

Should be a lot more than "some."

[–] mercano@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

Not surprised. The LA Olympics could be bad, too.

[–] CombatWombat@feddit.online -2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Fuck this dude — soccer isn’t just for Europe and South America:

“Football is traditionally in Europe and South America for the working class,” he says. “It’s a game for the masses, for keen supporters who love football, the passion, the excitement, even the boring games. It’s very disappointing that they’re effectively going to be excluded through pricing and I think it will devalue the World Cup a lot.”

[–] saltesc@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

The average English person isn't that much more well-travelled than the average American. He too is relying on snippets of typecast discourse to form an opinion on world culture which, of course, is way off.
