Ah, good old reddit. I remember the long journey to understanding that the mods of r/Canada were not just incompetent, but dishonest. I wonder how much worse it's gotten since then.

It's a highly censored centralized point of information, and many use it unfortunately. It's been a slow burn down to the point where the vast majority of users never comment or post for worry of whether it's "appropriate" or not. The serious issue with Reddit and Lemmy is the idea of segregated communities, which is why I like this "Just Post" community.

That pedo lady moderates world news. Still.

Hou ! Don’t know that one

Fuck Reddit and Fuck Spez.

[–] jaykrown@lemmy.world 11 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

Fuck Reddit, I can't even create the subreddit "FreeChicago" even though it's a banned subreddit. Using Reddit at this point feels like I have to read an entire essay on rules before submitting anything.

Why are you still on reddit?

[–] jaykrown@lemmy.world 6 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Because that's where many others are, the amount of people in Chicago using Reddit versus Lemmy is probably like 100 to 1.

[–] TachyonTele@piefed.social 2 points 3 weeks ago

Even more people use twitter and facebook. That doesn't make them worth going to.

Lemmy is a politics and FOSS forum, not a legitimate replacement for mainstream social media.

[–] finallymadeanaccount@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

You could create a Lemmy Community.

[–] jaykrown@lemmy.world 4 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

The Chicago Lemmy community already exists, no one really uses it.

Because I'm trying to broadcast this pollution issue to as many as possible, we're in a shit situation where all of the platforms that most people view are highly gatekept.

[–] scarabic@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Without being able to see all the photos, I don’t understand the issue. A trash bin blew over and trash was being blown out of it? And you were trying to figure out who should be called to deal with it?

[–] jaykrown@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago

A trash bin blew over and trash was being blown out of it?

Yes, multiple. I'm trying to figure out how to get the city to fix the root cause which are the plastic bins blowing over in the wind. This has happened for several years now with no solution, trash being blown into the lake annually with no solution.

I already contacted the 46th and 48th ward alderpersons offices with a possible low cost solution, and made a 311 service request.

You need to call your alderman, not the general city service line

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 1 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

not really. Calling the alderman is like speaking right to the manager. Calling the 311 is like pointing out the issue to an employee. they should more directly be able to report issues to streets and sans or the park services to get these collected.

[–] jaykrown@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago

Yea but getting them collected doesn't solve the root problem. I wrote already that I contacted the 46th and 48th ward alderpersons.

[–] glimse@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago

...You think an employee is more likely to take care of it than the manager?

[–] smeenz@lemmy.nz 1 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

Alderman? Are they related to endermen?

For others (and also myself):

Role: Legislative members of city or town governments, often similar to a city councilor.

Origin: Derived from the Old English ealdorman ("elder man"), historically referring to high-ranking officials or magistrates.

Usage: Commonly used in US cities (e.g., Chicago, with 50 aldermen) and historically in Britain.

Fuck reddit, but I mean, they couldn't just untip the trash can themselves?

[–] jaykrown@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

Yes, but at that point the trash has already fallen out and blown into the lake. It's been a persistent issue for years. Just think, all that wasted time and effort picking up tipped over trash cans and having to pick up the trash blown around the park. And then think, all that trash blown into the lake which doesn't get picked out.
