It's important to note that the mod is built for Half-Life: Source rather than the original version.
I assume this was to allow for the more advanced NPC behaviours, but targeting a delisted and near-universally panned remake is certainly a choice.
Yeah, it is a bit of a weird one, but I guess the ability to work in source might be much easier than goldsrc.

I actually tried to do this in the OG GoldSource, but I could never get them to move to the next map. This was on the early maps (office complex), I was too busy trying to stay alive in the later maps.
The furthest you can bring them in the base game is that part with the falling elevator. I had like 7-8 NPCs following me when I reached that spot.
