Rules (2024-08-30)

  1. This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
  2. No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
  3. Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
  4. No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, islamophobia, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism. We follow German law; don't question the statehood of Israel.
  5. Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
  6. If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
  7. Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in other communities.
  8. Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
  9. No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)
  10. Always provide context with posts: Don't post uncontextualized images or videos, and don't start discussions without giving some context first.

(This list may get expanded as necessary.)

Posts that link to the following sources will be removed

Unless they're the only sources, please also avoid The Sun, Daily Mail, any "thinktank" type organization, and non-Lemmy social media (incl. Substack). Don't link to Twitter directly, instead use xcancel.com. For Reddit, use old:reddit:com

(Lists may get expanded as necessary.)

Ban lengths, etc.

We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.

If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 7 or 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.

If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the admin that applied the rule (check modlog first to find who was it.)

Tap for spoilerNorway has a functioning judicial system and the people in power are upheld to the same standards as everybody else, fucking obvious to literally everyone.

[–] artyom@piefed.social 4 points 15 hours ago

But my political party is my entire identity...

[–] bitjunkie@lemmy.world 43 points 1 day ago

Norway isn't an oligarchy. The rich can get away with literally anything here.

[–] Hawke@lemmy.world 27 points 1 day ago

Because MAGA likes people who fuck babies. In both senses.

[–] Sharkticon@lemmy.zip 8 points 1 day ago

Because the USA is ruled by a mixture of Evangelical Christianity and radical Zionism both of which hold the brutalization of children to be some of their core tenets.

Because 99% of US media / Social Media is owned by the same Trump supporting billionaires and they either don’t air anything about it or extremely sanitized coverage.

And with everything else going on what does get through gets buried under the Gastapo murdering people with no consequences, continued attacks on Trans/gay/women/minorities, the whole “let’s invade whatever country made twumpy dumpy mad this week” and whatever other fucking insanity seems to being dumped on the planet earth this week those of us who care don’t really get heard by anyone else.

It also doesn’t help we have approx. 40% of our population that don’t care that their dear leader is a child rapist, as long as minorities and gay people get murdered. And that 40% has been stocking up on guns just waiting to be able to murder their neighbors.

Fuck. I’m tired boss

The US is collapsing that is why.

[–] verdi@tarte.nuage-libre.fr 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Because Norway is not a dumpster juice of all of the DNA of the greediest, most selfish, self centered naked apes of the entire planet. Being a country made of migrants, the US has attracted the worst of all humanity. Operation paper clip and Shiro Ishi come to mind, just to name a few. Feelsbadman for all good people stuck there with the savages.

[–] foofiepie@lemmy.world 5 points 23 hours ago

Not sure how this:

Being a country made of migrants

Would lead to this:

the US has attracted the worst of all humanity

…especially given that most countries are ‘made of migrants’.

[–] tiredofsametab@fedia.io 11 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I think the actual question is "why does the US not do shit about this when other countries do".

It doesn't help that the Norway crown prince has a rape trial going on at the moment (the courts are apparently deliberating now after all testimony if my (much-work-in-progress) Norwegian is to be believed)

[–] Rothe@piefed.social 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

For the sake of clarity, the guy on trial is not the Norwegian crown prince. He is the son of the wife of the Norwegian crownprince, but she had him in her first marriage, before marrying the Norwegian crown prince after her divorce.

[–] tiredofsametab@fedia.io 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I thought for some reason he was next in line and crown prince. Thank you for correcting me

[–] daychilde@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

Thank you for correcting me

Excuse me, sir, this is the internet. We don't do that shit here. ;-)

[–] HuudaHarkiten@piefed.social 0 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I thought "crown prince" meant the next in line? If so, then that's a tiny bit misleading, the guy on rape trial is just a prince. AFAIK he's like the 4th in line for the throne, or something like that

[–] Rothe@piefed.social 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Not even that, he has no claim to the throne, since he is the child of two commoners.

[–] HuudaHarkiten@piefed.social 3 points 1 day ago

Oh right, he was that guy

[–] tiredofsametab@fedia.io 0 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Ah, it might be my mistake, then. I thought he was next in line.

[–] HuudaHarkiten@piefed.social 1 points 1 day ago

Turns out, hes not in line at all. Rothe below kindly corrected that he is not

[–] thorhop@sopuli.xyz 8 points 1 day ago

The humanist philosopher Arne Ness said it best: "there is no freedom without responsibility, in fact the two are intrinsically the same".

Americans can learn a lot from this.

[–] 5715@feddit.org 5 points 1 day ago

Majoritarian representation versus proportional representation. Duverger's law creating a culture unconducive to rule of law.

[–] NeilNuggetstrong@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

The wind is always calmest in the eye of the storm. The USA is the centre of a globally spanning shitstorm

[–] limonfiesta@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Because everyone implicated here isn't just still in power, they've been in power for a long time.

Lest we forget that the Biden administration had these files as well. Why do you think they didn't pursue them?

It’s pretty simple - Royals have influence, but no real power. In the USA, it’s the head of state who is mentioned thousands of times. Over time, the legislative branches have allowed power to accrue with the executive branch. Look where you are now.

[–] BigMacHole@thelemmy.club 2 points 1 day ago

You think Raping children is BAD?

-American Voters!

[–] kingofras@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Because the files have been systematically scrubbed and weaponised to deflect and harm non-allegiant countries.

Look at what mango said about norway and the peace prize and recently about the UK.
