In recent years? People at the time were horrified at what Columbus was doing.
Wasn't the Spannish Crown planning to execute him before he died? Like nobody liked Columbus and the only reason he was ever held up is because the Italians were a non-factor during the first colonial period.
Not surprising. A loser ‘explorer’ whose own country didn’t like him went ahead in their name without full permission to the Caribbean to pillage, plunder, and rape the native people. Not only this but he brought friends to do the same on successive trips. He was told not to go and still went multiple times, claiming land and people in the name of his country who again, soured on him quick.

What all these fascists dont realize when they celebrate colonizers who "settled" occupied lands, is they're just normalizing someone doing it to them too.

Like, this is a legit thing with how group think works.
It's normalizing an in-group putting themselves first despite what's fair, and other ingroups get used to that being a normal part of life rather than striving for equality.
Which eventually leads to a populist revolt.
There's nothing new about any of this, and no reason to expect it to go differently.
Normalizing the overthrow of a society just makes people realize that 2-3 centuries isn't really that long and societies lasting longer than that is the exception not the norm.
Sometimes we're better off with a restart, and that single, small, easily arrived at realization, leads to further thoughts about political action they all different manners.
