Damn I had hoped they would simply retcon the movie. Really didn't like it. Now the animated series will only move lagterally story wise. Shame.

Because they killed Wash in the movie.
I always thought that was a weird call. I know Firefly didn't really have a chance for revival back then, but killing two of the cast seemed excessive.
Point of clarification ... he killed the characters, not the cast, right? .... right!?
"Thank God you're here, Officer. These cast members just came in and kept killing themselves on my property!"
It hit hard tbh. I think it was great, makes the movie memorable and all that. I find it tacky when the main cast has an invisible invincibility shield.
Movies With Mikey has an interesting anecdote from a pre-release screening he saw of Serenity. Wash's death was so unexpected that a woman in the audience started screaming and had a panic attack until she could be removed from the theater.
That part was pretty brutal, but it did make the stakes in the following hallway fight feel appropriately sky high.
I’m imagining the stakes of her hallway fight in the theater.
Remember the words of John A. Hollywood: "Everything can be retconned"
Wasn’t that Brett Con? I guess he’s Rhett Con now…
And Book FFS :P
Not going past Serenity makes sense, there's probably still some interesting stuff to do with the world, but it would just mess too much with the ending of Serenity. If the alliance is still around it should be extremely weakened, if it is still as strong and still hunting the crew of the Serenity then Wash and Book died for nothing. I don't think that's what the fans want or need to see. If they don't want to mess with that there are only two options. They could do a prequel to the series, basically the entire crew except for Simon, River and Book. The other option is somewhere between the series and the film, basically do what the original series was supposed to do. And they could pick up some things from the film, for example they could go into why Book and Inara left the crew. And I think the intro part of Serenity was always a little unclear, to me it seemed like River was captured and they freed here, others say its just a retcon to make it clearer why the alliance is hunting them to people who haven't watched the series, they could clear that part up.
The opening scene is a flashback. Simon states he got outside help to help her escape in the first episode of firefly. The opening scene shows directly that it was a recorded video. Simon clearly states he gave up his entire life to rescue her, meaning that he could only do this trick once to get that deep into the labs. In another episode, Simon uses his doctor training to look at her brain being horrified at what they did to her. And finally, the bad ass fight scene in the bar where river decimated everyone. Simon again makes it clear that the trigger words were given to him by the same people who rescued her.
I rest my case that it is a flashback to showcase the lengths Simon went through to save her.
Setting?
The verb, like deciding where the setting will be. I'm setting my self insert hucow Terminator fanfic in 1940s Detroit.
Early 40s or late 40s?
Late so the hucows can do the whole guns to butter thing. Or swords to cowshares.
Instead of animation they should just let this series be.
Fuck it. Go stop-motion. Maybe a live puppet show version.
I agree, it was around just long enough to set everything up. Characters, settings, plot all established.
Then it died right before it had to start paying anything off.
Now it's all things to all people. The firefly I imagine and the firefly someone else imagines are totally different, and it was going to be both.
Are you Jason Segel??
I’m definitely not Steven Seagal.
Could you be for the right price?
Only if they have cameos from muppet Angel and muppet Discovery.
