US officials say an invasion of the island would aim to pressure Tehran into reopening the Strait of Hormuz

Here's the original article from Axios instead of a propaganda outlet.*

The Trump administration is considering plans to occupy or blockade Iran's Kharg Island to pressure Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, four sources with knowledge of the issue tell Axios.

"He wants Hormuz open. If he has to take Kharg Island to make it happen, that's going to happen. If he decides to have a coastal invasion, that's going to happen. But that decision hasn't been made," a senior administration official told Axios.

The propaganda outlet takes this and, in the headline, subtly twists it into something he's already decided to do, which for some reason sprinkles extra alarmism onto an already extremely alarming report.

* Context for how drastically that article spins the protests in Iran.

This is the most obvious invasion since iced tea.

So we're going to send troops into the enemies most valuable place, they know this, and the entire place is a giant bomb before they even knew this?

Huh, I wonder how that will turn out.

I wouldn't hope for a massive disaster as despite clueless leadership american military is still incredibly strong and organized (relatively speaking). The issue if I understand correctly that in asymmetrical warfare winning a battle doesn't win the war and neither does winning a dozen battles. Just a another step in yet another quagmire.

[–] Skyrmir@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

It's not even a question of winning the battle, it's that Iran could very likely turn the island into a smoldering fire pit in a dozen different ways without even stepping on the island. From Iran's side, they're not going to win a face to face confrontation and they know it. If they spark up that island, oil prices shoot for the moon the next day, which puts Trump on a path to impeachment surprisingly fast. The right wing only reacts when things affect them personally, and gas is touching every one of them in their no no place, the wallet.

The US can take and hold this island I would presume, just as the English have done all over the world for centuries. The land around the straits as well, but that is a larger commitment that will lead to forever war, which is the entire point of this, so Israel can have a foil to domestic politics and reach across the border whenever they want on some pretext.

Trump called it a “crown jewel” recently, I think. And I remember finding it an arbitrary assertion from him. And I should have known he was projecting and or leaking what he was last told by an “advisor” again.

So you don't inform your allies in the beginning to suprise everyone, but then you lay out your plans for the next move to the enemy im detail. Is that some 5D Pearl Harbor Chess 🤔🤣

James Bond villain behavior. "And for my next move..."

It's already that time of the week again?

After this every oil and gas extraction and processing facility on the middle east is going to be destroyed. Everyone back to 1800.

You know, let's just burn up every single gas and oil field on the planet at once and be done with it. At least that will finally and definitively end the fossil fuels vs. renewables debate. (And destroy Earth in the process but yeah.)

“I’ll fix this by equipping children with jewelry and I hope they all get along.”

Meanwhile the planet melts down…

Good. Get all those troops into one small space. Genius move.

One small space with a few million cubic feet of highly flammable natural gas!

It makes sense from a few angles:

  1. it removes that from Iran's owning/use
  2. it establishes a beachhead right-there, where they can stage/launch from
  3. it gives them a base right in the crooked-straight, itself, to fight Iran's closing of it..

but

  1. it also makes them sitting-ducks, for Iran's retaliation..

( I'm probably missing about 60 important dimensions of this, too )

I'd check the location of the island again.

Every service member on that island will die or be driven off of it.
