Rules (2024-08-30)

  1. This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
  2. No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
  3. Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
  4. No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, islamophobia, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism. We follow German law; don't question the statehood of Israel.
  5. Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
  6. If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
  7. Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in other communities.
  8. Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
  9. No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)
  10. Always provide context with posts: Don't post uncontextualized images or videos, and don't start discussions without giving some context first.

(This list may get expanded as necessary.)

Posts that link to the following sources will be removed

Unless they're the only sources, please also avoid The Sun, Daily Mail, any "thinktank" type organization, and non-Lemmy social media (incl. Substack). Don't link to Twitter directly, instead use xcancel.com. For Reddit, use old:reddit:com

(Lists may get expanded as necessary.)

Ban lengths, etc.

We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.

If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 7 or 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.

If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the admin that applied the rule (check modlog first to find who was it.)

Denmark is reported to have quietly prepared to blow up its own runways in Greenland – as European allies rushed troops north – amid fears that the United States might attempt to seize the Arctic territory by force in January.

According to reporting by Danish national broadcaster DR, citing multiple senior sources in Copenhagen and across Europe, Danish forces deployed to Greenland in January 2026 carried explosives intended to destroy key airstrips in Nuuk and Kangerlussuaq, in order to deny access to any incoming US military aircraft in a worst-case scenario.

"Why won't my Allies help me in operation Epstein Fury?"

Ive been wondering lately, do we think that hes forgotten about Greenland?

[–] Tiresia@slrpnk.net 28 points 1 day ago

Donald Trump? Undoubtedly; he has probably forgotten his wife's name a couple of times.

But the Trump administration? Certainly not.

There’s precedent for this, he forgot about trying to withdraw from South Korea when one of his staff intercepted a letter that may have reminded him about it.

They even flew over bloodbags. All live ammo. They were ready for a fight.

Swedish television also said Swedish officers were sent too -- possibly among other nations -- under the official guise of a training exercise. This to force Sweden to become involved in the conflict if it were to take place.

France, Norway, Britain and Finland and even Germany also send a small number of troops. That gives me some hope for the future of Europe :) (Source: https://www.zdfheute.de/politik/groenland-bundeswehr-soldaten-usa-daenemark-100.html)

Can't just kick'em out. Besides, Orban is hopefully even gonna lose the election.

[–] Bullerfar@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

We can only hope

Might want to keep that one in your back pocket. With Iran being too hard a target, the US might just turn to something easier to save face.

[–] Bullerfar@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago (1 children)

He is going for cuba first

[–] GuyIncognito@lemmy.ca 7 points 1 day ago

Most likely, yes. They don't have the same kind of air defences or ability to strike back as Iran has, so it's going to be a guerilla war, so they'll have to eventually do something to save face and distract from the fact that they're bogged down in a guerilla war in Cuba.

Wait until they land. Then blow it up. But be sure to put up a "no trespassing" sign so it's nice and legal.

I look forward to the rest of my life, where I get to witness in real time the longterm consequences of Trump's second term. It wasn't the fact that they want to take Greenland and used every mean word in the book to smear my country when we bled the most for them in their pathetic wars in the middle east. It's how they treated Ukraine and Zelenskyj that sealed it for me. I will never fucking forgive America for Trumps second term.

Traitor nation. Karma will come for you.

Edit to add: I do still feel bad for the common American who has no say in all of this and will eventually be the ones to pay the price for the stupidity of others. That does suck and I don't consider them as part of my little hate boner. I'm purely focused on the US as a nation and the idiots in charge who do a terrible job.

This is what kept germans and Others from taking over schweizerland as well. The country will become useless and unusable when they blow up all their mountain tunnels.

The article won't load for me, but why destroy it when you can just put large heavy things on it?

[–] timwa@lemmy.snowgoons.ro 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Because you can drop a few people with parachutes who can move the large heavy things? Plus it's a lot quicker if you're not expecting any warning.

On top of that, repairing a bunch of well made and well placed craters in a runway sufficiently for heavy transport aircraft to use it again, tends to be a bit difficult, especially if all the heavy construction machinery you can steal nearby happens to be broken, and perhaps something stupid has happened to all locally available (imported) ready to use construction material for some reason, too. (Imagine someone dumping all the gravel into the sea, pissing on the cement, and lighting the asphalt on fire)

Preparing to destroy installations and resources an enemy can use in case of an invasion is a very old and very useful tactic. The impact of this is especially high with logistical installations in places where there are few locally available resources, so everything has to be brought in by the enemy. Logistics do win wars. Lack thereof does the opposite.

Since Europe was assumed to be the front line of WW3 during the entire Cold War, pretty much all European countries have quite some experience with preparing infrastructure useful to the enemy for demolition. Many bridges and other important parts of transportation infrastructure constructed during that era have been built with prepared shafts for planting explosives for that very reason. How to blow up road- and runways to cause maximum disruption is very well researched. There even is specialised equipment for drilling demolition shafts into existing roadways.

It is very telling that the Wikipedia article on prepared obstacles in that context only exists in German and Dutch.
