they embraced, extended and extinguished a lot of the germinating vr industry to try and force this shit to succeed.

And they made that little shitstain Palmer Luckey a multi-billionnaire so that he could donate to Trump and build his stupid little war drones.
Fuckin'disgusting. I honestly don't even know what the point of paying this much for oculus was. They barely had usable tech, nothing was patented, meta rebranded it anyway and they most definitely didn't have critical mass on their shitty store at the time.
And I feel like you could build a pretty decent competing product to the rift 2 and vive with 3 FUCKIN' BILLION BUCKS!
So glad I didn't waste my time trying to dev for that stuff. I wonder if they'll be pulling back from VR related hardware while the AI bubble drives the hardware market wild. Still waiting for a release date and price for the Steam frame.
I have friends who did. Luckily meta footed the bill, but they basically only paid for their own time and made no real profit. And they paid themselves a pittance to make it happen.
They're now making non-VR games and things are much better for them.
This VR thing essentially froze them in time and it's like they're only starting the studio now. 10 years later.
Oh, I'm still happily working on VR stuff, but the Horizons thing Meta has been pushing looks like a train wreck. I learned my lesson years ago doing facebook apps and noting how facebook didn't really offer any kind of support to anyone but the big players. I can't tell you how many times I got viral doing something I copied off zynga that got my app flagged as spam.
