Lol. It cost $2350 to stop being American?
That is the most American thing I've ever heard of.
Something that happened or was uncovered recently anywhere in the world. It doesn't have to have global implications. Just has to be informative in some way.

I think American citizens living abroad still have to pay income taxes or something. So they probably wanted to disincentivize getting rid of citizenship so they still get your taxes.
Uplifting news
It's not. The US taxes its citizens based on income earned worldwide. This prevents wealthy citizens from continuing to enjoy the benefits of US citizenship and use a US passport while also using tax schemes to pretend all their income was earned in foreign tax havens and not subject to income tax.
To people that wealthy, $2350 would be nothing. No rich person is keeping their US citizenship because of that fee. And, they’re avoiding taxes just fine as US citizens.
More likely, they want to make it easy for liberals to flee hoping it will help secure a majority for them.
thats what i think, they are short-sighted since liberal areas financially support the welfare queens. republicans are just too spread out in rural areas to make up the difference in the end.
also that plan would take years if not decades if democrat every emigrate to other countries. republicans party/influence would be long dead by then.
That's how I took it. Underlined by the reminder in the last paragraph that Trump is trying to end birthright citizenship.
And as with everything US this fucks regular expats and the rich don't give a shit because they're already "not earning anything".
I didn't even know you had to pay for this.
What a great time to not be American!
