I'd recommend having a banner/sign which explains why you are doing-so, so that you won't be accused/convicted of what others assume you to have been meaning.

It's nearly-impossible to get people to understand what one means, when one's motivation isn't identical with theirs.

& discovering how their-motivation is fundamentally-different from one's-own has to happen before one can have ANY chance at dismantling miscommunication.

& miscommunications now can have years-in-prison attached to them.

I’m generally against waving the flag of another nation at a protest. Nothing wrong with protesting about those issues—your intention about foreign affairs is just usually a lot clearer with a sign instead of a flag.

Im not wild about it myself. The protest is about our people wanting to change the way our government and society do things and I feel having foreign flags kinda suggest foreign influence. I mean if people in europe where protesting for the plight of the typical american I would not want them waving american flags because that is a symbol of our country which, like it or not, now includes what our government is currently doing. It does not really represent the current people. Im not big on nationalism though but you kinda gotta fight for what your cultural symbols mean or you will have the folks flying the countries flag along the nazi flag and a failed states flag. Given all that I could totally seeing flying a native american flag if there is one since they are not external.

I will avoid saying why I’m planning on doing it now only because it will color people’s interpretation of why I’m doing it.

Flags are symbolic—they exist to communicate, and the only criterion to judge their appropriateness is whether they communicate the intended message to the intended audience.

Without knowing your intended message, it’s impossible to say whether or not you should use one in a given context.

If it’s to support Iranian government, no, if it’s to support Iranian people, yes. If you are not Iranian, maybe leave that to Iranian people or those living/have lived there. Either way there will be people that interpret it one way and people that interpret it another. I’d try to understand the overall purpose of the protest and see if it’s supporting that or distracting from it.

I wouldn't because it is going to get misinterpreted by others. Trump supporters would argue that you're defending the existing Iranian government.

Someone else suggested an upsidedown American flag, which feels appropriate.
