Sydney (AFP) – Australia's online regulator warned porn websites they must block under-18s from Monday under sweeping new restrictions to protect children.

Some sites in Australia had already barred non-members on Friday and were refusing new registrations, days before being obliged to use age verification technology to keep out underage users.

The new rules expand Australia's online child safety measures following its world-leading December 10 ban on children under 16 joining social media platforms.

The crackdown restricts child access to "age-inappropriate content" including pornography, high-impact violence, suicide and eating disorders.

It covers porn websites, search engines, app stores, gaming providers and generative AI systems, including chatbots.

"Make no mistake, where we see failures or foot-dragging, we will hold companies to account," eSafety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant said Friday.

Failure to comply can bring penalties of up to Aus$49.5 million (US$35 million) per breach.

"Users will be asked to confirm their age when accessing age-restricted material on pornography websites and services," eSafety said.

"Clicking a button that says 'I am 18 years or older' is no longer sufficient. This is consistent with similar efforts being implemented internationally," it said.

Australia to require ID check/face check to access porn sites that are beholden to its legal system***

Now show some intestinal fortitude and do the same for alcohol advertising and gambling advertising. As a matter of fact apply strong ID checks & spending precommitments should keep the kids safe from gambling, their own and that of people around them.

This fiddling around the margins is performative theatre to distract the masses while they build the powers of the surveillance state.

Any statistics about the the development of VPN access numbers for Australia?

I have a maybe-conspiracy theory.

Israel, or Israeli citizens who were former IDF, have recently bought up a huge portion VPN companies (see outdated relationship with eachother here)

Now, conveniently as it happens, now age verification on porn sites (one of the top VPN drivers) is occurring all over the globe, in a lot of countries lobbied/bribed heavily by Israeli entities.

It is well documented that Israel has one of the largest and influential spy networks and they also have their hands in almost every mass surveillance company in the world (including having a "director of Zionist interests" at Facebook)

I think this is a big push to get everyone onto VPNs that they own to essentially route all internet traffic through a place where they can log and track all of it as they would benefit massively both financially and politically from that move.

Now block under-18s from accessing porn, and take it a step further, and ban any site (including X, including that one Lemmy instance that everyone defederated) for posting porn of under-18s.
