EDIT: I see now someone else has beaten me to the finish line with a more eloquent and more thorough post. Even my rage is not novel.

First off, a brief overview of the parties in play. Each party gets assigned a letter, so you know where to put your checkmark on election day. I'll put the letter in square brackets.

Konservative (conservative) [C] Which is a party that isn't very conservative to be honest.
They want to change a lot of things about danish society. Especially the taxes and the welfare. Get rid of it. Their old leader Søren Pape died of a brain aneurysm in 2024 and we were all supposed to be sad about it for some reason. I saw him about 6 days before he died hanging out in a local gay bar and I had to leave because the man and his cronies made me sick to my stomach. I can't remember, but I'd like to think I muttered some curse that damned him. Now headed by Mona Juul who is something very rare for danish politics - Someone who had a career before becoming a politician. Typically they do it the other way around. Here she is

Dansk Folkeparti (Danish peoples party) [O] They mainly want less danish people - As in get rid of immigrants.
They're also big on animal rights, allegedly, though they mainly market themselves via pork. Big on racism. We have them to thank for the fact that the danish national dish is a french peasants' dish (It's pork with potatoes basically. Gotta keep the muslims out.) Helmed by Morten Messerschmidt who has the vibe of a bond villain

Danmarksdemokraterne (The Denmark democrats) [Æ] Which is sort of an offshoot of Dansk Folkeparti started by its old leader Inger Støjberg after she got kicked out for doing a bunch of illegal political stuff. Even bigger than the old party on racism. Here she is

Borgernes Parti (The Citizens' Party) [H] Which is just...
So there used to be a party called Nye Borgerlige (New Bourgeois) which was created in 2015 because the racist parties we already had at that point just weren't racist enough. That party changes leadership in 2019 to a guy called Lars Boje. Lars Boje and the party has a bunch of scandals and Lars leaves a few months after becoming leader, because he wants to be paid a bunch of money by the party and the party doesn't want to pay him. So he creates a new party, which is this one. He also thinks menstruating is equivalent to shitting your pants. Look at this dickhead

Liberal Alliance (Liberal Alliance) [I] Ironically a party that quite often votes against personal freedom, if that personal freedom is enjoyed by a woman. To sound like someone from 2016 they're what you'd get if reddit and the concept of mansplaining had a child.
Apart from that they're big on tax cuts. Their leader, Alex Vanopslagh, got caught a bunch of years ago drunkenly heiling and singing nazi songs in a bar, and apparently that was a scandal for the journalist who broke the story, because how dared he encroach on a mans personal life like that? Big on tax cuts and "effectivising" everything (tax cuts). Alex is referred to by his supporters as "daddy Alex". He's very big on tiktok apparently. Currently slated to be the biggest party on the right. I want to drown this man

Venstre (Left) [V] which used to be the biggest right wing party, but the last few elections have been rough for them.
Kind of your run-of-the-mill european right wing party. Love me farmers, love me tax cuts, 'ate education, 'ate regulation, simple as. I don't know a lot about their current stuff, but I'm sure they still suck. Their leader, Troels Lund Poulsen, looks like an aggregate of their electorate

Radikale Venstre (Radical Left) [B] Which is an off-shoot of Venstre from a long long time ago.
They're centrists. Big on culture. It was their old party leader who was at the helm of EU when it forced Apple to change to using the industry standard charger cable, so that's nice I guess. If they were in the US they'd all have knocked doors for Hillary and chanted ITS Her Turn!

Moderaterne (The Moderates) [M] Which was started by the ex-leader of Venstre, Lars Løkke. Ostensibly a centrist party, because he says it is and that's good enough for danish media apparently.
Currently in government. Lars Løkke donated 50k Dkk to the Mujahideen in his youth, and has kept up doing stupid shit with money ever since. He is known as the "quota king" due to his time as State Minister where he would sell commercial fishing quotas on the cheap to his friends. The guy is the epitome of politcal corruption
Everyone loves him. The party got nearly 10% of votes last election.

Alternativet (The Alternative) [Å] which is mainly a slightly more leftwing alternative to Radical Left.
They came onto the scene little over a decade ago and announced they were an apolitical politcal party, that would function as a sort of "political laboratory". They got some wind in the sails early on, but lost most of it when they released a calendar with pictures of a bunch of the party members' members.

Socialdemokraterne (The Social Democrats) [A] They still brand themselves on being leftist and for the working man, but christ all of that is long gone. Helmed by Mette Frederiksen.
About 15 years ago or so they decided to be racist in order to steal votes from Dansk Folkeparti. Now they're just racist for the love of the game I guess. They're conservatives. Despite how much shit they suck they managed to get 27% of the votes last election. Maybe that has something to do with how they're treated with kid gloves by state media. Fun fact: The last editor in chief of the danish state broadcaster DR was childhood friends with Mette Frederiksen. And the current editor used to be a party member! Fun! Yay!

Socialistisk Folkeparti (Socialist Peopleparty) [F] They're social democrats. Started by a CIA asset in the 60's or something. Another party I haven't kept up to date with.

Enhedslisten (The Unity List, also known as The Red Green Alliance) [Ø] You might have seen @SoyViking@hexbear.net refer to them as the "pro-democracy party" in his reports on the situation up north.
Started by a bunch of teeny tiny communist parties that decided to band together in order to actually get enough votes to get into government, the unity list recently kicked out a bunch of the old guard of communists that created the party because they were too enthusiastic about supporting Palestine. Or so I'm told, the situation here is so bleak I'm kind of checked out on politics in Denmark, everything sucks so goddamn much. Their leader is Pelle Dragsted who really ought to be cool. He was in black bloc when he was younger, and he's in the administration for the union of collectives in Denmark where he has agitated for some of the older collectives with bigger houses and lower rent putting in more cash than the younger collectives.

These parties are typically put into two groups: "Red block" and "Blue block". Last election danish state media suddenly started talking about a third "purple block" which was just Lars Løkkes party Moderaterne - They had declared themselves centrists you see? Why not put the other centrist parties in purple block? Who the fuck knows.

Anyway, this was the election result in 2022

The parties in Red Block just barely managed to get enough votes to put together a coalition government, but the leadership of The Social Democrats, headed by Mette Frederiksen, decided to cut a deal with the "purple block" (which is just Lars Løkke and his stooges) and Venstre, which shocked a whole bunch of people.

I was mainly shocked because Socialdemokraterne got 27.5% percent of the vote despite how much shit they'd already sucked. There had been a huge scandal during COVID wherein Mette Frederiksen, in capacity as Minister of State, had danish mink-farms cull their mink, due to issues with disease in the population. This supposedly crushed the minkfarmers, who then got bought out based basically on their own valuation of farms that had not made a profit in decades. The scandal was of course that she dared do something proactive like have the mink culled, not that she paid a bunch of fuckhead farmers a fortune for their pile of tortured rags.
I was also shocked that LARS LØKKE THE QUOTA KING got 10% OF THE VOTE WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH THIS PLACE???

Anyway, that's sort of the preamble/context you need.
One of the first things the new government did was remove a holiday because we simply didn't have the money in state coffers to pay for everything if we kept the holiday. Then we bought a private jet for Lars Løkke and then we managed to find a couple billion that were just lying around somewhere, so we could give that to Ukraine.
Recently there was a minor scandal of an interview where Mette Frederiksen was asked to choose between a series of issues. Above everything else, more money for hospitals, better education, the climate, development, etc. she felt that the most important would be to get age restriction on TikTok...
And during elections for municipal governments it came out that large companies like JEUDAN (danish Blackrock more or less) paid for commercials for the Social Democrats and had given multi-million kroner apartments as "gifts" to several politicians.

Despite ALL OF THAT this is how the latest polls look

The social democrats are still the largest party BY FAR. And media still talk about them being part of "red block" for some reason. All western journalists get the fucking wall. We're probably getting "Daddy Alex" into government jesus fucking christ shoot me dead. The welfare state is already being gutted to shit. Between 2016 and 2021 universities had to lower their budget by 2% EVERY YEAR. And they've cut even more after.

The social democrats are running on "no more than 14 kids in each class in the lowest grades" and it's like WHO STUFFED THE GRADES FULL OF KIDS IN THE FIRST PLACE? YOU DID! But Mr. and Mrs. Denmark just eat their slop and listen to the "objective reporting" and AAAAHHHHHH 21% STILL VOTING FOR THE SOCIAL DEMOCRATS??? AND ALL THE OTHER PEASANTFUCKING PARTIES AND THEIR INANE FUCKING RACISM! WHAT THE FUCK?

I know the election is going to be bleak, I can feel it in my bones.

Man this really hammers home how silly the “let’s have socialism like they do it in Denmark” rhetoric is out of American succdems.

Also,

They came onto the scene little over a decade ago and announced they were an apolitical politcal party, that would function as a sort of "political laboratory". They got some wind in the sails early on, but lost most of it when they released a calendar with pictures of a bunch of the party members' members.

Enlightened centrism with LBJ characteristics

[–] BanMeFromPosting@hexbear.net 16 points 1 month ago (1 children)

And that "lets have socialism like the Danes" then go feed danish people's egos. Danes love to brag about the welfare state to foreigners, while voting for people gutting it.

[–] PKMKII@hexbear.net 13 points 1 month ago (1 children)

That seems to be a recurring theme with slightly left of center politics/parties, loyalty based on political capital spent on social services decades ago that’s long since been gutted by the same forces. It’s like boomers and gen Xers loyally voting blue no matter who because of the civil rights/Great Society policies in the 60’s.

[–] BanMeFromPosting@hexbear.net 7 points 1 month ago

That is more or less what is going on. Still amazes me and pisses me off though.

[–] StillNoLeftLeft@hexbear.net 16 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

Salute to your rage, this post gave me even more context after first reading the SoyViking Danish election primer and the pictures are just chefs-kiss.

The lib alliance guy looks like all the guys in the vicinity of the Finnish president and everyone in his orbit. It's essentially the same guy. The eurolibs are all like this.

[–] BanMeFromPosting@hexbear.net 10 points 1 month ago

Thank you, that I could add anything to SoyVikings prose means a lot to me

[–] CTHlurker@hexbear.net 12 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I feel your pain in not understanding shit about the people who vote for the Social Democrats. Like, I mostly don't understand anyone who doesn't vote far left, because I genuinely don't think any of the other parties are going to do anything useful.

I remember when I was working at a Danish university and some of my colleagues were talking about seriously voting for Liberal Alliance. I was floored, because this was when LA had all but declared war on the university sector, as the university was apparently too woke.

[–] BanMeFromPosting@hexbear.net 5 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Liberal Alliance for anyone who isn't in their "annoying 16-year old child" faze is always baffling to me. The fact they're so big honestly scares me.

as the university was apparently too woke.

"Wokeismen er gået for vidt!" is something I've heard a few too many times. It's crazy. As if it's even something we have here. It's also so funny because at the same time we have that wineclub for all the people who have been "cancelled" (received mild public critique) and that club is run by a man colloquially known as "The Eel". How the fuck can woke have gone too far if The Eel is running around unshackled, just shipping wine to whoever he wants?

[–] Keld@hexbear.net 4 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

"Ålen" was "cancelled" for rampant, repeated and systemic sexual assault in the form of being told that it was kind of gross that he encouraged high school and early college girls to give him lap dances and fuck management at his company.

The only public person grosser than Ålen was Jørgen Leth, a proud and admittedremoved and partaker in child sexual slavery who the entirety of the Danish establishment got really offended on behalf of when it was suggested that maybe you can't purchase the right to children's genitalia.

the things I want to say about these portraits are very unkind and insulting

[–] BanMeFromPosting@hexbear.net 7 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (2 children)

Most of the portraits are taken from the official government website (at least the ones with white backgrounds) which means they chose them themselves. So you are free to say whatever you want. Pointing out that Ingers portrait gives the vibe of a person who would feed you the blandest casserole as some sort of Gestapo Trick to suss out wether or not you were really white, isn't lookism. It's not about her physical characteristica as much as it's how she's chosen to present herself.
Her second in command when she helmed Dansk Folkeparti litterally looked like a pig though, which is lookism, but it's also true.

[–] miz@hexbear.net 5 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

Alex Vanopslagh's smug air and bouffant fill me with contempt. real crypto-nazi vibes and that's not the first time he sang nazi songs

[–] BanMeFromPosting@hexbear.net 4 points 1 month ago

The only reason Alex isn't in the Epstein files is because he was too young to go to the island as a predator and too rich to go as a victim. I hate him so so so much he looks like the most annoying guy at every social occasion and he carries himself the same way and somehow people like that about him.

[–] Blakey@hexbear.net 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Deep cut for anyone who isn't Australian but Ingers looks to me like someone who ran a fish and chip shop until the early 90s and then started the most racist political party in the country because she was mad about Asian immigrants existing.

...Pauline Hanson is currently enjoying a bit of a resurgence despite her original party being shut down aaaages ago over iirc financial shit (stealing funds), then about ten years ago her senior party members being caught on tape soliciting bribes from the NRA (yes, in the US). But she stays reasonably popular because she keeps being loudly racist, she's currently facing censure for some Islamophobic rubbish she said. Hate that asshole so fucking much.

[–] BanMeFromPosting@hexbear.net 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Deep cut for anyone who isn't Australian but Ingers looks to me like someone who ran a fish and chip shop until the early 90s and then started the most racist political party in the country because she was mad about Asian immigrants existing.

That's honestly not far off from her origin story. She posted a picture of her with a cake on instagram, celebrating the eviction of a bunch of immigrants.

[–] Keld@hexbear.net 2 points 1 month ago

yes the cake was crass, but I honestly will never understand how that became her ministerial legacy given that she was straight up trying to do nazi shit, like actual fucking concentration camps and actually stealing brown people's literal gold teeth

[–] Sanctus@anarchist.nexus 8 points 1 month ago (1 children)

This is what capitalism does to democratic systems. It jyst trashes and corrupts them. I truly believe none of the West will be surviving for another 100 years under these conditions. We will get revolts or Network States, not both.

[–] BanMeFromPosting@hexbear.net 4 points 1 month ago

Denmark feels uniquely cursed honestly. At least places like spain, France, even Germany has somewhat of a left movement left and at least some people in politics that are able to perceive reality. In Denmark it's just pure insanity

[–] Collatz_problem@hexbear.net 7 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Radical Left

They're centrists.

[–] BanMeFromPosting@hexbear.net 5 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Look danish politics is easy okay? You've Left who are on the right, radical left who are centrists, the moderates who are centrists, the alternative who are also centrists, social democrats who a conservatives, socialist peoples party who are social democrats, the communists who are socialists and the rest of them are fascists.

[–] AstroStelar@hexbear.net 7 points 1 month ago (2 children)

The only thing I want to know about Danish politics is what the logic is behind the single-letter abbreviations

[–] BanMeFromPosting@hexbear.net 8 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (2 children)

The way I understand it is that the party itself gets to choose the letter. It can, of course, not choose a letter another party has already chosen.
When the letters were handed out in the 1900's there was no choice though. They were just given out according to size. The social democrats were the biggest so they got A, radical left got B, the conservatives C and Venstre got D, but they later changed it to V.
The OG racist party Dansk Folkeparti chose O because it stands for "optimism, order and organisation" according to Pia Kjærsgaard who was the party leader basically since it was created and until quite recently.
I figure Danmarksdemokraterne chose Æ because it's a letter that isn't seen outside of Denmark.
Alternativet probably chose Å because a graphic designer in the party loved it or something like that.
Socialistisk Folkeparti chose F because it's the first letter in Folkeparti.
Enhedslisten chose Ø probably because it's one of the coolest letters in the alphabet (as evidenced by all those shitty coffee chains around the world appropriating it) and back when they actually dared to stand for something and have opinions they also managed to make good choices once in a while.

The rest I've no clue.

[–] Keld@hexbear.net 4 points 1 month ago

They were just given out according to size

SIZE IN COPENHAGEN. At the time of the national election in 1896 the largest party was Venstre, followed by an offshoot of Venstre called like "Moderat Venstre", followed by Højre, followed by the Social Democrats. You will note that the only one that fits with the system is C for Konservative/Højre.

Socialistisk Folkeparti chose F because it's the first letter in Folkeparti.

No they got it because at the time they were standing for election A (Socialdemokraterne), B (Radial Venstre), C (Konservativ), D (Venstre), and E (Retsforbundet, a party that has not existed since the 80s) were taken.
Parties were only allowed to choose their own letter by 1968, at which point the socialist people's party had been around and Aksel Larsen had been a CIA agent for 10 years.

[–] SoyViking@hexbear.net 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I'm pretty sure that The Alternative choose Å because it is the letter that looks the most like A, the first letter of their name. It is not the first time that someone has chosen a letter because it looks like another. When the Left Socialists (Venstresocialisterne) split from SF the letter V was taken so they choose Y instead. The Communist Party still runs in a few local elections Uber the letter R because K is taken.

In 1972 the Christian People's Party (Kristeligt Folkeparti) could not get the letter K because the Communists had called dibs on it so they choose Q instead. Later on the Communists disappeared from electoral politics, enabling the centre right Christian party to get the letter K.

As for the fascist Danish People's Party they run on the letter O, claiming it represents optimism or whatever. I have a different explanation. The Danish People's Party was founded on the ruins of the Progress Party, a far right fascist/anti-tax party. The Progress Party was founded in the 1970's by the tax lawyer, and later convicted tax fraudster, Mogens Glistrup who needed parliamentary immunity after having drawn the ire of authorities after brazenly marketing his "tax circus" by bragging about paying 0% in taxes. He chose the letter O as his party letter because it looked like the number 0.

Glistrup was a visionary in the absolute worst sense of the word, possessing brain worms far ahead of his time. His party platform was a deeply unserious rant against the state, wanting to replace the post of prime minister with the post of "minister for the abolition of government activity", replacing unemployment insurance with "gruel dispensers" and replacing the military with an answering machine saying "we surrender!" In Russian. Later on he pivoted into deranged islamophobic conspiracy theories, claiming that all "Mahomedans" wanted to decapitate all Danes and stack our skulls in pyramids. He would have felt right at home in the current zeitgeist of Reddit libertarianism and entrenched islamophobia.

[–] BanMeFromPosting@hexbear.net 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

replacing the military with an answering machine saying "we surrender!" In Russian.

heartbreaking

Kinda funny that in the glory days of Socialdemokraterne they at least understood that it didn't make sense for Denmark to waste money on the military when any major would be able to roll them over no matter what, and armament would just make you a more valid target.

[–] SoyViking@hexbear.net 2 points 1 month ago

That was back in the days of the competent imperialists. Denmark has been going through a similar human centipede process as the rest of the west during which the elite, who were supposed to know better, were ingesting the propaganda meant for the proles and now believe it fully. They really do think that they are invincible because of the purity of their Aryan democratic free markets or whatever.

Meanwhile the generation that remembered WWII is dead and the generation that remembered being scared of nuclear Holocaust during the cold war is on its way out. The people at the helm now are the children of the long 1990's who grew up to think of the west as invincible and who never had to deal with real material or ideological opposition.

[–] Keld@hexbear.net 5 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

OH I KNOW

I know this

It's not interesting.

Okay so back the year 1900 preparing for the big election of 1901 they figured needed a way to quickly hand count votes and to so they assigned each party a single letter so the counters just had to flip through and count the As, Bs, Cs, etc.
When this system was made the letters were assigned based on the party's size in the Copenhagen municipal system.

A was the social democrats (Socialdemokraterne)
B was the Social Liberals (Radikale Venstre)
C was the Conservatives (Konservative)
D were the Liberals (Venstre) etc.

Now this system had the dangerous ability to make some sense, so parties started being allowed to request their own letter, so Venstre wanted a V, leaving D open, and some parties stopped existing and new ones were formed just taking whatever letter was open or whichever they felt was fitting.

[–] Comrade_Vig@lemmygrad.ml 7 points 1 month ago (1 children)

We need to burn this shithole to the ground. Social Democracy is OBJECTIVELY the moderate wing of fascism.

Also look at this racist poster I saw on my way to work the other day (AI slop):

Lebanese women ?

[–] BanMeFromPosting@hexbear.net 5 points 1 month ago (2 children)

I can't upload pictures of everyone it seems. That's really too bad, they all look like absolute fucking ghouls

[–] Keld@hexbear.net 2 points 1 month ago

Pelle Dragsted looks like a cartoon villain, which is odd because he's by far the least bad. Franciska Rosenkilde just has a very unfortunate smile.

[–] SoyViking@hexbear.net 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

This woman, Mai Mercado from the conservatives, is not a party leader but I have the misfortune if seeing her unsettling likeness hung as posters in lamp posts every day.

This is not a smile. This is a predator with exposed teeth sneering at you.

[–] BanMeFromPosting@hexbear.net 1 points 1 month ago

She looks computer generated. She looks like what you'd get if someone had brought in a Puritan character design consultant for the final stretch of development for Red Alert 3

so the main party is the one that decided to be racist to steal votes

tell me the racist stuff they did besides less immigrants

[–] Keld@hexbear.net 5 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

the unity list recently kicked out a bunch of the old guard of communists that created the party because they were too enthusiastic about supporting Palestine. Or so I'm told

Not to my knowledge A lot of the founding parties have disassociated themselves and then reassociated themselves over and over again over various matters, but the Red-Greens never kicked out the marxists, that would require having a hard line even if it was a negative one.

They got some wind in the sails early on, but lost most of it when they released a calendar with pictures of a bunch of the party members' members.

This undersells it. The dick pic collage was made at the request of the head press officer and was implied to be an order from the head of the party, meaning that a lot of people felt pressured to send the pics or risk their political careers. This was in part seen as problematic because Uffe Elbæk, said party leader, is a gay man and this was interpreted (IMO rightfully, but suspiciously) as sexual harassment.
Uffe Elbæk would later quit the party when in the wake of his 1000th scandal a new party leader was elected and he thought it was unfair that he didn't get to be the leader of the party any more, so he made a new one which almost immediately collapsed. (At which point he rejoined The Alternative)

They're social democrats. Started by a CIA asset in the 60's or something. Another party I haven't kept up to date with.

Axel Larsen was the leader of DKP from 1932 to 1958 (Having previously been a trot until Trotsky got exiled at which point he converted to traditional ML thought with the idea of developing it based on Danish conditions), however the tankie situation created a situation where Aksel Larsen agreed with the majority of the Danish left that the crackdown was wrong and had delegitimised the Soviet Union against the rest of the leadership of his own party who were "Kremlin faithfuls", it came to a vote and he got ousted and he became a CIA agent about it. Leaving the party, founding SF and feeding info on communists to the CIA.

SF since served as the left wing of the Social Democratic party, a role that last had any fucking meaning under Jens Otto Krag, the last social democratic prime minister who even pretended the party was actually social democratic

[–] CTHlurker@hexbear.net 3 points 1 month ago

So Denmark's constitution has this "fun" little quirk where any legislation "in progress" (waiting to be voted on in final form) is automatically cancelled when an election is declared / called. This effectively means that parliament doesn't do anything useful during an election, but it also means that Danish Governments attempt at placating the masses through a cancellation of the chocolate tax (one of the remaining "sin taxes" from the 90s / early 2000s) was just cancelled / voided, along with the removal of VAT on books (something that was estimated to save an average family a whopping 500 DKK per year).

[–] LeninWalksTheEarth@hexbear.net 2 points 1 month ago

every white country is shit

[–] Clippy@hexbear.net 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

So there used to be a party called Nye Borgerlige (New Bourgeois) which was created in 2015 because the racist parties we already had at that point just weren't racist enough.

They're dabbing on us
