Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:

We ask community members to appreciate the uncertainty inherent in critical analysis of current events, the need to constantly learn, and take part in the community with humility. None of us are the One True Leftist, not even you, the reader.

Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:

The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.

  1. Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.

  2. Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.

  3. Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.

  4. Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.

  5. Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.

  6. Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.

  7. American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.

  8. Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.

  9. AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.

shops warn it's being stolen to order

Bull fucking shit. This is not true. It is a myth. The PR companies for the UK supermarkets spread it to make people less sympathetic to shoplifting.

It was more believable when it was being spread around about stolen meat that people would imagine meant thousands of pounds of the stuff was being stolen to resell instead of individual people stealing the meat to cook for themselves at home. It's completely and totally unbelievable for fucking chocolate bars.

It’s also consent manufacturing for more surveillance capitalism.

Sainsbury's said it had begun using "boxes on products which are regularly targeted", with £2.60 bars of Cadbury Dairy Milk locked up in one London branch.

One the photo it's still £1.50

what does "stolen to order" mean?

[–] Infamousblt@hexbear.net 10 points 1 day ago

You go to pirate bay and navigate to the food tab

Instacart but cutting out the middleman I guess.

But reading the article it feels like they are taking some creative license with their chocolate black market.

Go on... Just try to work it out on your own

Edit: I woke up in a bad mood, you didn't deserve this. Sorry

Why are you talking down to them? It's a weird phrasing.

I think they're saying that boosters are reselling the chocolate, and they steal new product whenever they get a new order. I think it's sort of a play-on-words of "made to order" that comes across as clunky and weird.

I woke up in a foul mood and everything was pissing me off.

Like, the plot of the most recent Gone in 60 Seconds - all those cars were stolen to order.

If you want a new hifi, ask the dodgy guy down the pub to steal it for you - that's stolen to order

I'm not sure who's boosting boosts but then again we live in strange times.

I've bought stolen steaks and prosecco from people coming into the Black Garter in Newcastle, probably those people are fencing chocolate now?

And earlier last year a man was arrested by Cambridgeshire Police with a coat full of Cadbury's Creme eggs, external.

The br*tish are depraved, totally beyond redemption and must be dealt with.

Getting tackled by the cops and a thousand Cadbury Eggs worth of Creme oozes out of your jacket as you lay on the ground:

democracy-manifest

What's the charge? Enjoying a thousand succulent eggs?

Get your hand off my Cremis!

This coincides with Stavros Halkias's late 2025/early 2026 UK tour.

[–] Acute_Engles@hexbear.net 7 points 1 day ago

How come it's more profitable to steal chocolate and sell it at a discount than it is to sell your labour?

I don't believe the story, really, but this kind of low stakes crime should absolutely not pay more than an entry level job if you want your little capitalism game to keep going holy shit

This might need an animal product content warning. Or it might all be palm oil and corn syrup at this point. Who knows?

[–] CarmineCatboy2@hexbear.net 9 points 1 day ago

'no cocoa included in this chocolate' warning

Chef's kiss in this article was putting this link right below the section with most crying about the shoplifters.

Becca Amy Stock, a TikTok influencer who goes by the name Becca Eats Everything, set herself the task of reviewing every milk chocolate bar at Britain's major supermarkets. The 29-year-old spent six hours and £100 on her rigorous research.

im something of a renown and honored treatologist myself. i can eat and partially digest a burrito the size of my own head.

Being an ogre is tragically unaprecciated in society :(

they hit us with sticks and throw garbage at us until it's time to move the pull out couch, then suddenly we're part of the village.

[–] jackmaoist@hexbear.net 6 points 1 day ago

They're actually preventing thieves from eating this shitty vomit flavoured chocolate.
