Welcome to the discussion of US Politics!

Rules:

  1. Post only links to articles, Title must fairly describe link contents. If your title differs from the site’s, it should only be to add context or be more descriptive. Do not post entire articles in the body or in the comments.

Links must be to the original source, not an aggregator like Google Amp, MSN, or Yahoo.

Example:

  1. Articles must be relevant to politics. Links must be to quality and original content. Articles should be worth reading. Clickbait, stub articles, and rehosted or stolen content are not allowed. Check your source for Reliability and Bias here.
  2. Be civil, No violations of TOS. It’s OK to say the subject of an article is behaving like a (pejorative, pejorative). It’s NOT OK to say another USER is (pejorative). Strong language is fine, just not directed at other members. Engage in good-faith and with respect! This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban.
  3. No memes, trolling, or low-effort comments. Reposts, misinformation, off-topic, trolling, or offensive. Similarly, if you see posts along these lines, do not engage. Report them, block them, and live a happier life than they do. We see too many slapfights that boil down to "Mom! He's bugging me!" and "I'm not touching you!" Going forward, slapfights will result in removed comments and temp bans to cool off.
  4. Vote based on comment quality, not agreement. This community aims to foster discussion; please reward people for putting effort into articulating their viewpoint, even if you disagree with it.
  5. No hate speech, slurs, celebrating death, advocating violence, or abusive language. This will result in a ban. Usernames containing racist, or inappropriate slurs will be banned without warning

We ask that the users report any comment or post that violate the rules, to use critical thinking when reading, posting or commenting. Users that post off-topic spam, advocate violence, have multiple comments or posts removed, weaponize reports or violate the code of conduct will be banned.

All posts and comments will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This means that some content that violates the rules may be allowed, while other content that does not violate the rules may be removed. The moderators retain the right to remove any content and ban users.

That's all the rules!

The State of the Union is in about 15 minutes. The President of the United States cares more than anything about ratings. If you disapprove of the past year, express your disapproval and avoid watching live.

He's only going to lie and lie anyway. What's the point of watching that?

What he chooses to lie about and the narrative he tries to spin can be important, especially on the eve of a major war.

What we got was not though

It’s 3am where I live. I wasn’t planning on listening to a demented pedofiles rambling in the middle of the night.

Propaganda of the United States

Not my cup of tea

I'd already planned on skipping this and looking at Colbert's excerpts on his show. It wouldn't be the same anyway without Speaker Nancy Pelosi golf clapping at his gibbering. And ripping up the written copy as a chef's kiss.

During the last one he said all medical research funding cancelled cause of transgenic mice . Cause he thought that meant transgender.

I'm watching for the Bingo game. I'll get Bingo when he mentions Greenland.

No shit, not to hurt his ego, just to protect your brain, and hurt his ego.

I'll just watch the condensed version tomorrow.

summary: everything is better, everyone is making more money, everything is cheaper, all crime is down, every industry is producing more, inflation is gone, unemployment is gone, housing is affordable, healthcare is affordable, there are zero illegal immigrants, etc

For those of us not versed in the Divided States... whatever it is, what does the state of the union usually do/entail?

[–] dhork@lemmy.world 11 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

It's a speech that the President gives to a joint session of Congress, so Senators and Representatives are all in the chamber together.

The Constitution mandates that the President gives Congress an update on the State of the Union "from time to time", and over the years that has evolved into a speech given around this time of year, every year except the first year of a President's term. It is also viewed as an opportunity for the President to advocate for legislation he favors.

People in Iowa looking for that gas station with the $1.85/gallon

[–] Lemmyoutofhere@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Only watching because it’s going to be fucking hilarious.

[–] this_1_is_mine@lemmy.ml 13 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Watch later it will be the same thing

[–] Lemmyoutofhere@lemmy.ca 7 points 1 week ago (2 children)

True. Ten minutes in and can’t stomach it anymore.

My wife walked into the living room with it on her phone . I got up and left. Lol

Covid daily briefings ruined any patience I had for listening to dudebro speak.

[–] undefined@lemmy.hogru.ch 9 points 1 week ago

I can’t even read quotes of him speaking, it’s just so bad. And when I do hear it it just sounds like someone whose throat is encrusted with caked-in layers of stale McDonald’s and KFC fryer oil.

[–] melsaskca@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 week ago

That's about when I bailed. It all sounded so "the same".
