I mean tbf..... 4x the payload is kinda the most important stat for a tank destroyer. Also I'd be willing to bet the single 30mm chain gun would outperform 4 20mm guns.

The titanium armored cockpit is also great to have when you’re frequent called in to do close air support.

tbf even at the time the A-10 was made that wasn't predicted to increase the survivability that much in its intended role. The entire fleet of some 700 A-10s was expected to last two weeks if war broke out with the Warsaw Pact.

Not two weeks on average. Two weeks to deplete the entire 700-strong fleet.

What happens when someone attempts to answer the question "why don't they just make the whole plane out of the black box"?

more can mean biger dakka

bigger dakka do more

bigger dakka better dan smol dakka

carry less different dakka mean more dakka for only dakka

dat mean more dakka

I actually had to look this up, but it's honestly not as big of a difference as I was originally thinking.

The Corsair with 6x 12.7 would be putting out a combined approximately 4500 rounds a minute compared to the A-10s 30mm at about 3900 per minute.

I think the warthog still may be winning in the dakka race especially when considering the amount of lead being thrown.

Not a historian, nor a mathematician, so this is all subject to correction:

In the 6x12.7 configuration, the F4U can deliver something in the neighborhood of 91 megajoules of energy per minute, through with a small magazine, it's limited to about 22MJ total.

The single GAU-8 clocks in at around 780MJ/minute (8.5x) and 230MJ total (10.5x).

The A-10 can also sling depleted uranium instead of lead. Doesn’t make a difference when firing at infantry, but helps punch through armor when trying to stop Soviet tanks from pushing through Central Europe.

What Soviet tanks? 🤣

Yes, but big is larger than small.

Its OK that you don't know how to do math, but let me make it clear for you:

4x20 = 80 1x30 = 30

Its pretty obvious which is better here.

Well, it's clear we have a disagreement needing real world experimentation.

You get in your tank and I'll shoot you with a 30mm chain gun for 3 seconds. Then I'll get in my tank and let you shoot me with your 4 20mm machine guns for 3 seconds.

Easy.

The Corsair has 10x the payload and 160 guns for the same cost as an A10.

Maybe back when the US manufacturing was capable of plane factory go brrr noises. Could you imagine what Lockheed martin would charge nowadays to install each one of those rivets?

It's fun to consider that the Corsair with modern sensors would probably be a pretty effective anti drone and close air support platform in Ukraine.

Having a GAU-8 is an auto win imho.

[–] Jumi@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

Low accuracy, low penetration, massive recoil and radioactive fallout?

Yeah, sounds like a massive win to me.

Definitely good enough for hunting Shaheds.
