Soulslike - Discussion, News, Memes

This is a community for discussion, news, and memes pertaining to the video game sub-genre "soulslike".

Given Lemmy's size, the definition of soulslike may be treated relatively loosely. While games like the numerous FromSoft titles, the recent Star Wars Jedi games, Lies of P, Nioh and similar games should be the focus, games that incorporate soulslike elements - like Hollow Knight and Blasphemous, for example - may also be discussed here.

Basic Lemmy-quette applies. Additionally, since flairs don't exist yet, please do make sure to include a marker to denote what game your post is about in square brackets for clarity's sake. An example could be:

[BB] This enemy is so difficult!

or

[DS1] Anyone struggling with the gargoyles?

MODERATORS

I'm playing anything but soulslikes currently. Overwatch just got a pretty big update and got five new heroes added in one patch, so that's been quite some fun. Been thinking about continuing my LoP DLC playthrough, but we'll see if it comes to that. Got some work to do for school.

With Nioh 3 having just dropped, I thought about my stance on spoilers in soulslikes but also in video games in general. For very story-heavy games, it sucks quite a lot to have a major plot point spoiled to you. There's usually a lot of buildup to these reveals so getting told about them prematurely can ruin a lot for me. When it comes to soulslikes, it's not as much of a problem for me. Most are usually quite light on ~~spoilers~~ lore, with some notable exceptions here and there, and focus more so on combat, exploration, gameplay. Sometimes, just seeing a name is a spoiler already, more so when it's a character that appears in a different, non-fight context, sometimes seeing the name of a track in the soundtrack is enough. Overall, though, I still get enjoyment out of the game despite already knowing bosses and story of the games. For example, even though I am overall not too fond of Elden Ring, I had fun playing through the game for the first 50 or so hours even though I had seen the game in its entirety beforehand.

What about you? Have you had the plot of a soulslike spoiled to you before? Did it lessen the enjoyment of the game for you?

To anyone playing Nioh this weekend: enjoy!

This is actually the only genre I don't like spoilers in. Usually to me spoilers are an incentive to try something since my time is limited and I need to know what I'm getting invested in. But for souls-likes, the puzzle and the enigma are the allure. Sharing interpretations afterward is fun, but if I don't get to discover things myself then I don't get to have my own interpretation.

Makes a lot of sense. I feel like I usually don't have good enough a grasp of the lore for me form my own opinions based on evidence seen in the game, so I usually have to resort to content creators telling me about what I've missed

Ooh! That's the magic of it though! The narratives are more compelling when you're given space to be uncertain and form inaccurate theories. It's like a story with an unreliable narrator except that narrator is you as you're being fed little tidbits of lore and vibes.

Something that brought me to the mental state to appreciate that was the Elder Scrolls games. The lore is highly conflicting and dependent on the perspective of the people writing it in universe. And the hegemonic history writers in the universe are also notorious liars. And some parts of reality also seemed to be formed by consensus or at least the whims of self interested individuals

Try making a bad conjecture some time! Being wrong is very entertaining and then you also get to feel entertained when you learn the truth afterward

I see your point and the appeal. I'll give it a go sometime!

I've been playing through darksouls remastered again lately, which I really enjoy. Back in around 2012 I played prepare to die edition the first time, after a friend had introduced me to it, and he helped me through a ton of the bigger obstacles after I spent a while beating my head against havel in the undead burg lol. I really don't mind spoilers in souls-likes all that much, just because I don't really feel like the experience is ruined by it.

I don't have any soulslikes that I'm playing at the moment. I'm hooked on XCOM again, but hoping to find inspiration to resume my LoP DLC run again too.

I typically don't mind story spoilers in most soulslikes, because ths combat is the main reason I play them. Also, if it's a FromSoft title, the plot is already hard enough to follow even with someone explaining it to me, lol.

How did you feel about following Sekiro's plot overall? Since it's pretty direct overall and doesn't leave too many open ends compared to the other FS games

Sekiro definitely feels like the exception. Although, I'm sure plenty of side-story content flew right over my head.

Discovery is one of the greatest joys in video games so I try very hard to not rob myself of that experience.
I have intentionally "spoiled" myself(inconsequentially), a couple of times though, like when I checked out an early boss fight in lies of P to see if the gameplay was as good as people said, or recently I wanted to know if/what content from SotE was added in the nightreign dlc so I looked that up... but well, going in with fresh eyes is the best, imo. Some things become meta in a community and are impossible to avoid, but in this genre is very hard to make sense about anything without context, so...

anyway, I'm about to fire up nightreign and tomorrow I'll get back to demon souls. A little NR sketch I did on earlier today, the chaos goat... such a good fight, a banger soundtrack.. awesome sound design ah! tough mf tho.... :P but definitely my favourite character design from the game.

I feel like it's a different story if you go out of your way to look something up than if you're spoiled without having a say in it. Agency is taken away in the latter case which almost always sucks.

Love your Libra sketch :) Enjoy your time!

yeah, I agree 100%.

I'm doing another Elden Ring rando! I might be addicted, randos are so much fun.

For my first playthrough I don't want to be spoiled about anything, figuring stuff out is a big part of the experience. Especially the more obscure stuff. But by the time I do my 3rd or 4th run I don't care and some stuff I have zero chance of figuring out myself. I do like to play offline though, so you don't get the 3000 messages in front of hidden walls.

I do like watching lore videos, but I don't care about the lore when playing. People can spoil all the lore they want, it's super interesting to me and doesn't really impact gameplay in any way.

Elden Ring rando is so fun.

I like randomizers in general, but what is interesting about Elden Ring randomizer is that it's less a puzzle and more of a difficulty mode. You're not confronted with as many hard stops by not having a certain item like you would be in a Zelda randomizer. The challenge (and fun) comes entirely from having to think outside of the box with your build, and not knowing what bosses you will find in which locations.

But if you're good, and the bosses are forgiving*, you can go about your business like any other Elden Ring run. The path is before you, if you know where to go.

*I say this as someone whose most recent randomizer replaced the Magma Wyrm boss in the back way to Altus Plateau with Consort Radahn. Yeah, that run died a bit early, haha.

Seeing people whine about spoilers because they saw what a boss looks like annoys me. Like how is that spoiling anything? The ONLY boss that ever felt like seeing them or knowing their name would be a spoiler is the final one of SOTE, because it is actually relevant and shocking when you consider the story/lore.

I dislike spoilers. A spoiler might pique my interest in a particular piece of media, but as soon as I have decided to consume a particular piece of media, spoiler or no, I'm not gonna look up anything related to it.

What did I know before playing Elden Ring? Souls game by Fromsoft, Open World, good game and that's it; okay, I saw a couple of screenshoots about Margit, Malenia, and a giant hand, but other than that? Nothing. I didn't even watch a trailer for the game before playing it or its DLC. In fact, I have yet to watch a single trailer for Elden Ring.

Some are only concerned for spoilers about the story (in a video game). But for me, especially in a Souls game, it's all about the vibe. I want to experience that vibe in this fantastic interactive medium firsthand.

What will I be playing this weekend? I'm almost done with my ~~race~~ meandering journey to NG+7 in Elden Ring. I'm currently in the middle of NG+6, but I should reach NG+7 this weekend. I'm probably going to respec my character for the last game cycle from my Dragon Priestess cosplay build to a powerstance spear build - it's what I did in my first playthrough in base game. I know now a tiny bit more about the game, so let's see how overpowered I can make it.

I dislike any spoilers I haven't asked for except reading "Amazing chest ahead". That always lifts my stamina bar.

spoilers

I mean, finding out what happens during a single event in a storyline that doesn't even begin to make sense until you've played through the game 5+ times and watched 20+ hours of vaati videos for context; I mean what surprise is there to be spoiled?

"The crazy death eating monk at the top of the dragon area in the rot infested continent is actually the animal protector of the dual beings in a single form god that protects a rune making it possible to kill a god!"

Wow you lost me at "death eating monk" or

"The old man in the wheelchair you see in the alternate dream dimension that exists between life and death, he can walk, and is being controlled by an extra dimensional alien god, who torments him with a living doll made to resemble his ex partner from when they murdered a village full of fish people, that also exists in a dream, in order to steal the corpse of another god; all so the god that is controlling the old man can eat the spirits of the people the god turned into werewolves!"

Uhhhhhhhhhhhh

Like there's very little that can be spoiled here. Sekiro has the most narrative imo, but it has multiple endings. You can live and the lord can die, the lord can die and you can live, you both can live and go on vacation in China, or betray your lord to join your father and become a serial killer.

Speaking of Sekiro, its what I'm playing this weekend. After struggling through my first play through maybe like a year ago, coming back to it it's so good and I'm much better at it. Turns out 250 hours of Executor pays off
