Soulslike - Discussion, News, Memes

This is a community for discussion, news, and memes pertaining to the video game sub-genre "soulslike".

Given Lemmy's size, the definition of soulslike may be treated relatively loosely. While games like the numerous FromSoft titles, the recent Star Wars Jedi games, Lies of P, Nioh and similar games should be the focus, games that incorporate soulslike elements - like Hollow Knight and Blasphemous, for example - may also be discussed here.

Basic Lemmy-quette applies. Additionally, since flairs don't exist yet, please do make sure to include a marker to denote what game your post is about in square brackets for clarity's sake. An example could be:

[BB] This enemy is so difficult!

or

[DS1] Anyone struggling with the gargoyles?

I'm playing anything but soulslikes currently. Overwatch just got a pretty big update and got five new heroes added in one patch, so that's been quite some fun. Been thinking about continuing my LoP DLC playthrough, but we'll see if it comes to that. Got some work to do for school.

With Nioh 3 having just dropped, I thought about my stance on spoilers in soulslikes but also in video games in general. For very story-heavy games, it sucks quite a lot to have a major plot point spoiled to you. There's usually a lot of buildup to these reveals so getting told about them prematurely can ruin a lot for me. When it comes to soulslikes, it's not as much of a problem for me. Most are usually quite light on ~~spoilers~~ lore, with some notable exceptions here and there, and focus more so on combat, exploration, gameplay. Sometimes, just seeing a name is a spoiler already, more so when it's a character that appears in a different, non-fight context, sometimes seeing the name of a track in the soundtrack is enough. Overall, though, I still get enjoyment out of the game despite already knowing bosses and story of the games. For example, even though I am overall not too fond of Elden Ring, I had fun playing through the game for the first 50 or so hours even though I had seen the game in its entirety beforehand.

What about you? Have you had the plot of a soulslike spoiled to you before? Did it lessen the enjoyment of the game for you?

To anyone playing Nioh this weekend: enjoy!

I'm doing another Elden Ring rando! I might be addicted, randos are so much fun.

For my first playthrough I don't want to be spoiled about anything, figuring stuff out is a big part of the experience. Especially the more obscure stuff. But by the time I do my 3rd or 4th run I don't care and some stuff I have zero chance of figuring out myself. I do like to play offline though, so you don't get the 3000 messages in front of hidden walls.

I do like watching lore videos, but I don't care about the lore when playing. People can spoil all the lore they want, it's super interesting to me and doesn't really impact gameplay in any way.

Elden Ring rando is so fun.

I like randomizers in general, but what is interesting about Elden Ring randomizer is that it's less a puzzle and more of a difficulty mode. You're not confronted with as many hard stops by not having a certain item like you would be in a Zelda randomizer. The challenge (and fun) comes entirely from having to think outside of the box with your build, and not knowing what bosses you will find in which locations.

But if you're good, and the bosses are forgiving*, you can go about your business like any other Elden Ring run. The path is before you, if you know where to go.

*I say this as someone whose most recent randomizer replaced the Magma Wyrm boss in the back way to Altus Plateau with Consort Radahn. Yeah, that run died a bit early, haha.
