In California:

Hell no = No.

Hell yeah = yes.

Hella = a lot

Hell = Bakersfield

[–] Soggy@lemmy.world 3 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Hella can also mean "yes" in some contexts.

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 3 points 5 days ago

That's when they're super excited and say "hell yeah" too fast. 😌

What the helly?

In Canada we use both, we're very cultured.

The second bloke is completely missing the nuance of the "yeah, nah". It doesn't simply mean "no". It means I've heard and acknowledged what you've said but disagree or have a different opinion. Examples

"Mate I'm fucked, want to go to kfc for brekkie?" "Yeah nah last time I went it was shit"

"Ah fuck my bad!" "Yeah nah it's all good mate, no worries"

"Trump isn't all that bad, I agree with his policies" "Yeah nah he's a pedophile rapist, you're fucked in the head mate"

[–] Evil_Incarnate@sopuli.xyz 13 points 6 days ago

Also "nah, yeah" can mean "I understand". So if you want to say "I understand but disagree" it's "nah, yeah; yeah, nah"

I've always used "Yeah, nah" as "I get what you're saying but I disagree" and "Nah, yeah" as "No problem here with what you've just said and I agree with the sentiment". I rarely use the latter though, at least as far as I know. It might pop out without me knowing.

Also the 'Nah, Yeah Nah' which is more of a 'no i dont think so, but still kind of considering it and... no, definately not after all'

Australians use "yah, no" and "no yah" the same way Wisconsinites do? That's wonderful.

Well if what the image says is true, no yeah, same, but we pronounce yes "Yah"

[–] maniacalmanicmania@aussie.zone 2 points 5 days ago (2 children)

I misunderstood. I thought you were were saying we do. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, we don't say Yah. We say "Yeah, nah'. I can't say I've ever heard someone say 'Nah, yeah'.

[–] Brickhead92@lemmy.world 3 points 5 days ago (1 children)

In Queensland 'nah, yeah' is said but less frequently as 'yeah, nah'.

[–] Reygle@lemmy.world 2 points 5 days ago

No Yah I get it, I enjoy that we use them the same way :)

[–] Deceptichum@quokk.au 1 points 5 days ago

I use nah, yeah all the time in Victoria and it’s pretty common from others.

Australia out here doing Phase Shift Keying

Listen, all y'all, it's a sabotage

[–] GroundedGator@lemmy.world 2 points 5 days ago

Nah yeah y'all Nah yeah y'all Hey hey hey Nah yeah y'all

[–] HollowNaught@lemmy.world 2 points 5 days ago

As an Australian, whole we do say yeah nah a fair bit, the infamous nah yeah is slowly fading into obscurity, to the point where people are questing if it was ever used in the first place
