Yep. Been on a John Woo kick lately, just finished A Better Tomorrow II and I think I've hit all the essential stops by now.

Hard Boiled is where he really starts to fully embrace his hostility to realism and just lets the bullets fly where they may. The DNA of Face/Off is here in Hard Boiled and the hospital scene remains one of the best action sequences of all time.

Hell yeah it is.

I think his next film Bullet in the Head, which is not as well-regarded or as well known as hard boiled or The Killer, tops it in terms of just how violently over the top and melodramatic it is. It's Vietnam war gold heist movie. But Hard Boiled has coolest action scenes woo has ever done.
