Self Improvement

491 readers
1 users here now

A community which focusses on improving yourself. This can be in many different ways - from improving physical health or appearance, to improving mental health, creating better habits, overcoming addictions, etc.

While material circumstances beyond our control do govern much of our daily lives, people do have agency and choices to make, whether that is as "simple" as disciplining yourself to not doomscroll, to as complex as recreating yourself to have many different hobbies and habits.

This is not a place where all we do is talk about improving "productivity" (in a workplace context) and similar terms and harmful lifestyles like "grindset". Self-improvement here is intended to make you a generally better and happier person, as well as a better communist, and any other roles you may have in your life.

Rules and guidelines:

  1. Posts should be about self-improvement. This is obviously a wide category, and can range from advice, to finding resources, to self-posts about needing to improve in a certain area, or how you have improved, and many other things.

  1. Use content warnings when discussing difficult subjects.

  1. Do not make medical decisions solely because of a discussion you have had with any person here (e.g. whether to take or not take medications; diagnoses; etc.) as we do not vet people. All medical problems should be discussed with a real-life medical professional.

  1. Do not post harmful advice here. If this is seen, then please report it and we shall remove it. If you are unsure about whether it's precisely harmful advice or not but feel uneasy about it, please report it anyway.

  1. Do not insult other users and their lifestyles or their habits (unless they ask, I suppose). This is a place for self-improvement. Critique and discussion about a course of action is encouraged over shit-flinging. Don't talk down to people.

There are common rhythms in Jazz music and I'm taking something and just focusing on them and every different way they can be played. This one is + 2 + or + 1 + on the triplet grid. I did this before with another rhythm, very helpful. 12 minutes everyday.

Doing the same thing with Hertas on the triplet grid. 8 minutes everyday. This is easy for me so I don't need much time to get it.

The Good: I've been eating a lot healthier recently. For the most part all of it is home-cooked meals with real ingredients. I've also gotten back into climbing as an exercise. It was something that I used to do all the time but covid killed the habit and my depression made me stay away for years. My sleep schedule is fantastic with me getting ample sleep each night and waking up feeling rested. And for the most part, I've completely stopped drinking energy drinks. I still drink an enormous amount of tea daily but it's probably better than the shit I was drinking multiple times a day before.

The Bad: I'm still drinking. It hasn't really progressed but I can all but guarantee that it's a problem. I've been self-isolating myself and alienating myself from some of my oldest friends. I feel like I don't have the mental energy to take care of my body and all of my daily responsibilities and also have a robust social life. And my work still actively makes me want to self-delete a lot of the time but I am still trapped within it for the time being.

I'm sure there's more for both but I can't really remember them at this point. Life is hard and I feel like I'm just barely able to scrape by.

Great news! I got a summer job lined up and it’s out of Ohio, the pay is in the toilet but this is a huge gamble in getting my adulthood started in earnest. Now I want to look for a spring gig if possible, I’m going to go insane if I keep having to put off participating in society.

This morning I spent learning a little bit of SQL and I think I’ll spend the day going through the BoltSQL website and assess how I felt about the experience.

I had an interview and they said they'd let me know this week. Another company wants to interview this week as well. Getting back into a routine, not worrying about my personal finances and helping out comrades more will be nice. I saw Send Help yesterday, which was awesome. Still not drinking. I would be moving for either gig so I'm going to some select tourist spots that I somehow never visited in years of living nearby.

I got two offers for hvac tech either out of state traveling position or lead installer and while I'm happy my resume is pulling these in (I felt higher than any drug I taken) I very much want something local so I can still be here for my family. Next week might start going into places with my resume and speaking to the manager. My plasma visits money wise mean I'm floating barely but hoping it changes.

I started reading a bit of capital and listening to some audiobooks while going on long walks around town. Found a park with calisthenics equipment and I can get there early enough before anyone else is around. Valintines day got me down but it'll pass like everything else.
