After doing DIY on my old dusty victorian house, I am convinced that the greatest invention mankind has ever made is plasterboard.

This is what old houses were made of before plasterboard: these are the wall beams decorated with thousands of wooden slats that you'd then apply a thick render on to make a wall (we're looking from the otherside)

I've had to rip these little bastards out and their shitting nails one by one, coating myself and the entire house with dust just to get access to the damn beams.

Once exposed, I bought some fucking plasterboard like a normal human being, cut it to size using nothing but a pen knife, and then fixed it to the beams like I was hanging up a painting.

Easiest thing in the world, looks great, easy to remove later for repairs, piece of piss:

I’m with you on this. But back in the day, they could have done the same thing with like regular boards.

That's true... and why in heck didn't they?

I watched a cool video that covered this/the history of wall coverings not too long ago! Been a few weeks, but I think that old style involved horsehair mixed with plaster that they basically just slopped onto the walls.

That was super interesting, thank you!

You're not dusting your walls?

[–] three@lemmy.zip 22 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I dust your mom's walls weekly.

She says you're one of the most reliable housekeepers in the industry.

Really are, worth every penny and then some. But I just can't forgive them for the shoddy job they did plowing the bushes in the front garden.

[–] jaybone@lemmy.zip 5 points 1 day ago

Yeah his mom told me you do it weakly.

Walls get dusty only to a very minimal degree because they're vertical. Walls in the houses of people who smoke get smoky and also more dusty because smoke residue is sticky. If you want to spend time dusting, go wipe down horizontal things where the dust is actually visible and annoying, and don't worry about your walls. Once the second dust particle lands on the first, they'll both fall to the floor on their own.

Right?! Also I have 2 air purifiers and they don't seem to be doing shit. Dust everywhere. Always.

[–] ThePJN@sopuli.xyz 7 points 1 day ago

Hey if we humans can have debatable success at verticality, why not walls?

[–] Remember_the_tooth@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

89-degree wall with a nonstick coating. Problem solved.

[–] Eiri@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

What kind of nonstick coating? Surely not Teflon?

[–] Remember_the_tooth@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Not necessarily, no. There are many other nonstick options aside from fluoropolymers like ceramic coating or seasoning the surface.

[–] Eiri@lemmy.ca 4 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

Instructions unclear. Threw handful of basil at wall.

[–] Remember_the_tooth@lemmy.world 3 points 20 hours ago

That's okay. It's also a prep counter, so now you have caprese salad, if not a clear exit path.

[–] normanwall@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

Right so we need slippery anti static paint for walls so they don't get dusty

Is that a thing already? Surely

[–] RockBottom@feddit.org 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

We are dust on the wall of earth.
