Welcome to the News community!

Rules:

1. Be civil

Attack the argument, not the person. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on.

2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.

Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.

Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Clickbait titles use hyperbolic language and do not accurately describe the article content. When necessary, post titles may be edited, clearly marked with [brackets], but may never be used to editorialize or comment on the content.

5. Only recent news is allowed.

Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.

6. All posts must be news articles.

No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials, videos, blogs, press releases, or celebrity gossip will be allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.

7. No duplicate posts.

If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

8. Misinformation is prohibited.

Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.

9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.

All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.

10. Don't copy entire article in your post body

For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.

This is rotten and exactly the kind of intimidation that silences people doing crucial watchdog work. Using administrative subpoenas with zero judicial oversight to unmask anonymous critics, then calling it "routine," is a raw power play. Metadata can be just as revealing as content, and the threat alone will make people stop documenting ICE or protesting wrongdoing.

Tech companies need to stop being passive. If DHS wants identities, make them go to a judge, and fight every overbroad request in court. Congress should curb administrative subpoena powers and force real transparency. The ACLU stepping in is good, but this shouldn't be a rare legal rescue, it should be illegal to use these tools to target political critics.

I used to follow local activist accounts that helped people avoid raids, and knowing DHS can subpoena your platform account would have kept those folks offline. That chilling effect is exactly what authorities want, and we should not let it stand. Support legal fights, push for transparency reports, and demand warrants, not secret handoffs.

Tech companies need to stop being passive

you need to realize that US tech bros are bot only complicit but actually the main drivers and sponsors of this speed run into a fascist surveillance state

Stop using their products. Stop your subscriptions. Stop all unnecessary consumption.

Tech oligarchs are funding this shit MAN!

[–] comrade_twisty@feddit.org 9 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Yeah, stop giving them any more money immediately. That’s the only message they’ll understand.

[–] Tyrq@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I don't know if enough people care to make the sacrifice. I like the idea of having hope, but I don't have much faith left in humanity to fight against the system they're so tied into now

[–] comrade_twisty@feddit.org 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

If everyone who asks this question joins us we’ll be more than enough!

[–] Tyrq@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 1 month ago

I hope so, it's only going to get more grim until enough people make a significant impact on all of these evil fucks. And that's just the money, they'll still be ideologically evil no matter how much we squeeze them.

And the CIA or other government is usually helping fund them.

Exactly this. Anyone who thinks that we the people would be given communication tools for free (free of cost, under our control and completely secure) from those that oppress us is sadly, sadly mistaken.

They handed us the very thing that allows them to look deeply, deeply into our lives. Oh! And sell us shit while they do it.

I always knew this day was coming. I've got a long online post history, and most of it is very critical of the government, and extremely critical of Trump and MAGA. If they are targeting critics, sooner or later my name is going to come up.

[–] ruekk@lemmy.world 9 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Not on here, but same. I'll save you a seat in the gas chamber we'll inevitably end up in

[–] IAmYouButYouDontKnowYet@reddthat.com 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

At this point I kind of look forward to it. Survival instinct doing it yourself is so strong.

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 3 points 1 month ago

Yeah, I put in 12 years and almost a million Karma on Reddit before I was permabanned in the post-Inauguration bloodbath, along with thousands of others, for a statement which I had posted numerous times without so much as a warning.

They obviously took note of my opinions, and my willingness to express them, and decided that this was a new Trump era, and they immediately decided to grovel, and give me up, along with all the others. If they didn't have a file on me before, they do now.

I was watching this yesterday. She talks about the way the government pushes private companies to follow out their spying basically.

We already gave out freedom and rights away a long time ago. Everything is just for show.

https://youtu.be/UjHYZ3LiRQI

Honestly I'm convinced these news stories are just for show to bend the average person's mind to believe they don't already have all your digital data.

No one should feel safe using any of the top brand tech. ...and sadly you can't feel safe using the smaller companies either.

The fact a war hasn't started already is kind of mind blowing and really shows the American spirit of freedom is all bullshit. No one wants to admit reality they just want to continue this odd half-life escapist lifestyle that gets marketed to them by the people that use them.

[–] village604@adultswim.fan 5 points 1 month ago (2 children)

You definitely can't feel safe using Lemmy either

There really is no privacy at all anywhere.

[–] n0respect@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

There is if you are rich enough.

If we're going to live in a privacy-less world, it needs to be for everyone

It's wild.... Right now that's the current nuke race... Ai policing and surveillance. And that's the reason for the geopolitics... Say america took over Canad, venazuala, and Greenland.... Then they instill their modernized crypto and tokenization of commodities... That would mean they are on top of the world. From there they just need to consume other nations... Basically the entity that successfully implements AI and ai policing etc... owns humanity.

People are actually dumb as fuck though and instantly suck the dick of emotionl marketing campaigns that rape their humanity.

I honestly would think america would have a lot of suicide bombers.... But no American even cares enough.

E en the Epstein file are probably tainted if you really understand how the game is played. Who wouldn't Epstein and anyone that agrees with him or owned by him not find people to submit bullshit accusations and make fake emails to muddy the water? Not to mention mass media that just farms money off emotions and the naive influencer that think they are playing the game.

Obviously Epstein's a fuck and fucked up, but at the same time he seems like a fall guy for bigger entities. Probably the CIA and friends.

[–] n0respect@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 month ago

The world's future is in a really frightening place right now. It looks like, with the US advocating for a world controlled by US, China, and Russia, that "they"* are literally trying to make 1984 happen with forever wars between colluding enemies and everything else that dystopia brings.

I agree, Epstein was a .. not a pawn. Maybe a bishop.

*In this case we know some of who "they" are. Like the Heritage Foundation.

[–] Smoogs@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

And how exactly is that working in everyone’s safe interest?

What a farce.
