Billionaire philanthropist Melinda French Gates has said her ex-husband, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, being named in new files relating to the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein dredged up "painful times in my marriage".

She told an NPR podcast she feels "unbelievable sadness" about the Epstein allegations and that the people named in the records, including her former husband, need to answer to it.

"I am so happy to be away from all the muck," she said. The couple divorced in 2021 after 27 years of marriage.

Records released by the US justice department include an allegation by Epstein that Bill Gates caught a sexually transmitted disease. He has called the claim "absolutely absurd".

If I found out someone I know rapes kids on a regular basis I would personally call the police on them but that's just me.

[–] fleton@lemmy.world 4 points 5 hours ago

Was there any mention in the files (yet) of him doing anything with kids? All I heard about was the antibiotics and the russian hooker.

Stupid whore

[–] ClassifiedPancake@discuss.tchncs.de 18 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

The way she repeatedly emphasizes how far away she is from all of this makes me wonder how true that really is.

[–] ChunkMcHorkle@lemmy.world 25 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

Yeah, I clocked that too. I think it's deliberate, but more for legal reasons. She's probably terrified Bill is going to get sued by some trafficking survivor, hence the emphasis on "ex-husband," and "he needs to answer those questions," etc.

I say that because she separated from him as soon as the Epstein thing really started to register publicly, and implicit accusations of adultery were already a thing with him. To her credit she's never been credibly linked to Epstein, or to put it another way, her repulsion always read as real to me. But who knows. They're all doing the darvo so it's hard to tell.

OK that article makes it pretty clear she is not associated. You could be right it’s for legal reasons.

The fringers must be happy with the implosion of old Microsoft.

Some of it all began with a little secret room inside Excel 95.

No sympathy for her, because she pretended not to know anything until someone else told everyone.

If she had blew the whistle as soon as she found out it woupd be one thing.

But she covered for child rapists until everyone else found out, and now is legit trying to pass it off as "crazy, right?"

If she knew and kept her mouth shut for whatever reason, then she's an accessory at least after the fact

Fuck all these billionaires who think the rules don't apply to them and their friends.

She also had a big hand in fucking up the American school system for decades.

Stupid rich people used their wealth to purchase politicians and override the opinions of professional educators.

Fuck all these billionaires who think the rules don't apply to them and their friends.

The rules apply to them? I'm yet to be shown otherwise.

[–] resipsaloquitur@lemmy.world 2 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

Plus, she married a billionaire, not a saint. What did she expect?

[–] Ilovethebomb@sh.itjust.works 1 points 6 hours ago

Pretty sure he wasn't a billionaire when they met.

Billionaire philanthropist

The most disgusting oxymoron I've read this morning

[–] shawn1122@sh.itjust.works 18 points 16 hours ago* (last edited 16 hours ago) (1 children)

As disgusting as this is, is it really surprising when most of media is referring to a child rapist and sex trafficker as 'disgraced financier'.

[–] Saapas@piefed.zip 1 points 1 hour ago

I think it's to give out background for who this child rapist and sex trafficker is beyond the whole thing the news is talking about. It's like writing news articles about a murder conviction and just calling the person "convicted murderer", sure it is accurate but also that's the what the whole article is about

He spent a lot of his money to eradicate disease in other countries. I guess he was just offsetting himself.

[–] zr0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 23 points 22 hours ago

“Oh you know. My husband fucked some very young girls and I even got STD from it. But this is still no reason to talk about it publicly”.

Yes Melinda. You are protecting a pedophile. You are part of the problem.

So sympathy here for that bitch.

[–] Ilovethebomb@sh.itjust.works 5 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

I don't think Bill has actually been accused of anything criminal, has he? Even if the stuff about getting STDs is true, there's nothing to indicate the women involved weren't adults.

[–] a1tsca13@lemmy.world 6 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

I honestly don't know the full extent of the accusations against Gates. But more generally, even if the people involved were adults, how do we know it wasn't criminal? How do we know the women were involved consensually? And for those that did "consent", how do we know it wasn't due to coercion and the enormous wealth and power imbalances at play? The pictures of Gates released with one of the previous dumps sure don't make it look like everyone was happy to be there with him... obviously a lot of this is speculation, but I'm weary of using the logic of adult = not criminal activity.

[–] Slashme@lemmy.world 1 points 6 hours ago

"How do we know it wan't criminal" isn't how presumption of innocence works.

[–] TheDemonBuer@lemmy.world 12 points 1 day ago

Billionaires become billionaires because they want all of the power and privileges that come along with it. If having the total freedom and liberty to do whatever you want is your goal, there doesn't seem to be any better way to accomplish that than to become obscenely rich. And I think that's why so many people tolerate this cultural, social arrangement: because their goals are aligned with the super wealthy. The difference between the rich and the poor isn't their values, it's their net worth. That's why everyone is hustling so hard every day to try and get as rich as possible, so that one day, maybe, they might be the one laying out on the deck of a yacht, drinking expensive champagne, snorting coke and getting a hand job from a beautiful, young girl.

Why did she keep his name?

[–] MeatPilot@sh.itjust.works 43 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

It's called Gatekeeping, you wouldn't understand because it was before your time.

[–] resipsaloquitur@lemmy.world 8 points 23 hours ago

*Gates-keeping

[–] MonsterMonster@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

Did any other prominent people get divorced around the same time?

[–] Jhex@lemmy.world 3 points 22 hours ago

Painful to pee?

[–] MonsterMonster@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Interesting body language from her in that video.
