From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Linux is a family of open source Unix-like operating systems based on the Linux kernel, an operating system kernel first released on September 17, 1991 by Linus Torvalds. Linux is typically packaged in a Linux distribution (or distro for short).

Distributions include the Linux kernel and supporting system software and libraries, many of which are provided by the GNU Project. Many Linux distributions use the word "Linux" in their name, but the Free Software Foundation uses the name GNU/Linux to emphasize the importance of GNU software, causing some controversy.

guys!! don't you think we should start a big buzz on the internet for Linux? after what we discovered that bill gates the CEO of the evil company Microsoft is a predator in the Epstein files, then it's our chance to start a global media campaign against Microsoft and all of it's products!! we will make people leave windows for Linux! I know that It might not have that big effect since it's very hard for people but I'm sure we can wake many people up and save them from windows to the warm hands of the pinguin. what do you think? I just think that we should seize every opportunity to spread Linux. #boycottMicrosoft #switchtolinux

So how are you going to fund this "global media campaign"?

Crush microsoft. Smear their name. Worst software in history and it keeps getting worse!

fuck off, bot.

Sure any idea on how?

For my part i have been talking about linux to everybody for the last 10 years, it made me very pleasant at parties, highly recommend!

The few people that actually listened tried it out, contacted me 5 times per day asking for tech support for half a week, then switched back because they did not like the shape of the icons in KDE.

Bill Gates hasn't been CEO of Microsoft in 26 years. Not that there aren't plenty of reasons to boycot Microsoft.

I usually go with the Halloween Papers when It comes to ethics.

I think it's better for Linux to grow its base organically and the best advertisement for it is its own quality. But maybe that's just me.

It's not just you, I agree. People should switch to Linux because they like it, not because they were told Microsoft sucks.

I started my Linux journey out or curiosity as a preteen, didn't stick with it. Dabbled in college wi5h Linux. Ultimately I started down a privacy rabbit hole, started hating Microsoft the more I learned. Switched to Linux. Sure, I started using Linux for my machines out of hatred for Microsoft and Apple (and google...) But ultimately, now I just love Linux.

I have freedom to do what I want, how I want. I love supporting open source initiatives.

I had a similar thing. I started using Linux for privacy reasons and over the course of replacing all of the proprietary software I was using I fell in love with FOSS. Especially GIMP and other photography-related software.

[–] hellmo_luciferrari@lemmy.zip 1 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

You're one of the first people I have ever heard who loves GIMP. Usually people in that world are brainwashed into Adobes products.

I appreciate GIMP and other FOSS offerings.

[–] jpicture@lemmy.zip 1 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

GIMP is excellent software and I love using it. There are some great plugins coming out for the new GIMP 3 series too.

[–] hellmo_luciferrari@lemmy.zip 1 points 10 hours ago

Any plugins you'd recommend specifically?

No because Linux still has some usability issues that normal people HAVE to wrap their heads around. People switching to Linux HAVE to understand there are going to be some pain points that they have to figure out. We already exist in a culture that HYPER consumerist and people constantly buy shit they don't fully understand the use for and maybe don't really need. Things are better with Linux now and they're getting better but a lot of projects are also run by volunteers, it's going to be hard for them to a)scale up their processes and b) keep working on stuff with little-to-no compensation. And people don't like paying for software if they can help it soooo.. yeah. As good as Microsoft is at making the argument for switching, the linux push is probably, in actuality, a major push for iOS. And this is from someone that only switch to Ubuntu last year and doesn't really mess around with the terminal and config stuff and finding my time to be pretty solid with some hiccups there and there. I have, probably, more understanding that the majority of people that use computers and whatnot but I wouldn't say I'm an advanced/power user but I still have issues with getting some things going easily/effectively, just because solutions always involve a google search and someone on a forum also having the same issue and giving out what they tried to do to fix it and that's not what most people want, they usually just want to having an experience that works and they don't have to fuss with (which is why defaults matter so much).

I like your enthusiasm.

There is, of course, no reason you can't start such a campaign locally, beginning with your friends and family. It's tough to make people switch, but you can always try.

If you work in tech, finance, government, education, healthcare, or any large corporation almost certainly impossible without changing jobs.

I’d like to target this buzz at developers and companies so they start supporting Linux natively more.

[–] umbrella@lemmy.ml 2 points 15 hours ago

we already have it no?

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 1 points 15 hours ago

I am far to busy with all the various fads and buzzes that I create and guide the human race with to do this. I mean seriously im pretty sure everyone here is a linux advocate.
