I've decided I'm going to run a marathon. The running season in Aus is only a few months away, so I'm not going to aim for this year, but will focus on mid 2027.

Around 10 years ago, I used to run, a lot! I did lots of half marathons and parkruns, but never a full marathon! I'd already decided to train for a half (that's my goal for this running season), but after watching a few people talk about training up for a full marathon, I've decided I'm going to do it as well!

I used to run a 1:38 HM, but I'm 10 years older, and no longer have the fitness I used to or the advantage of testosterone, so I won't be setting any records, but it's the first time I've felt excited about having a running goal in a long time!

I'm back!

Nice! I love your slow approach. Too many influencers pretend like you can train for a marathon from scratch in one season. I decided two years ago to build up to an ironman triathlon, with a half planned this year (with half marathon) and then a marathon next year to prepare for a full iron man either next year or the year after. I have loved having this massive goal but I also make sure to have a smaller goal every 2-3 months to add onto the motivation. Are you adding any 5/10k races in your build up for the half?

With my background, I probably could have gone faster, but with running season almost here, 4 months brings too high a risk of injury to scale up my mileage that fast. And 16 months is a bit slower than I'd like, but short of crossing the equator, my options are basically 4 months or 16 months :)

Are you adding any 5/10k races in your build up for the half?

I run parkrun every single weekend, so I don't do 5km races. I could do a 10km, but I don't have anything specific planned.

We'll see how it goes :)

I wish there was a parkrun near me! Good luck with your goals.

Good luck! It's great to have a goal! Are you still running now or are you starting from the beginning?

I started slowly building up in November. The goal is a HM this running season. But the plan now is to not stop there, but keep going!

I've never truly stopped running in the last 10 years, but my distance has radically cut down. For much of it, I was only doing a 5km parkrun every 2 or 3 weeks as my only run. So barely running, but still running :)
