Welcome to the News community!

Rules:

1. Be civil

Attack the argument, not the person. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on.

2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.

Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.

Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Clickbait titles use hyperbolic language and do not accurately describe the article content. When necessary, post titles may be edited, clearly marked with [brackets], but may never be used to editorialize or comment on the content.

5. Only recent news is allowed.

Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.

6. All posts must be news articles.

No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials, videos, blogs, press releases, or celebrity gossip will be allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.

7. No duplicate posts.

If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

8. Misinformation is prohibited.

Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.

9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.

All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.

10. Don't copy entire article in your post body

For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.

Several crew members of a ship that collided with a bridge in Baltimore almost two years ago are still being held in the US by federal authorities despite the fact that no criminal charges have been brought against them.

In the early hours of 26 March 2024, the MV Dali departed the port of Baltimore bound for Sri Lanka. While navigating the Fort McHenry channel, the 1,000ft-long Singapore-flagged cargo vessel lost power before striking the bridge. The impact resulted in the deaths of six people who were working on the bridge at the time.

what the actual fuck. “speedy trial” my ass lol. If you are held without charges for more than an hour you should be cleared of all possible charges.

The more time passes, the more chances witnesses and evidence is lost, too.

« Authorities have confiscated crew members’ passports to restrict travel, the sources said. They are allowed to move freely around Baltimore, but require the FBI’s permission to travel to other states.

“I’ve never seen this [detainment] before,” said a source. “It’s very unusual. But nobody wants to get into a shouting match with the FBI »

FBI can do whatever the fuck they want apparently because you know… it’s not appropriate to tell them not to

The other part of this is that their employers are footing the bill for all of this. And these folks aren't being held in jail or anything. I don't know where they are but presumably they are in some extended stay hotel somewhere and still getting paid.

To me, it sounds like the shipping company is bending over backwards to placate the FBI and somehow avoid super huge fines. And as long as the shipping company is paying for it, the FBI is in no hurry.

Two years

2026 - 2 = 2024.

No no, that's impossible. That would have been under a President who Respects the Constitution. No way they'd just ignore the 5th amendment like this.

In case you're serious, every president is a bastard

Trump is worse, but we can also acknowledge that Biden was catastrophic for the trajectory of the US.

I can't believe Biden still thinks people give a shit what he thinks, if I were him I would disappear to an island and never talk to the press again I would be so full of shame for destroying my countries future and placing control directly in fascists lap.

"Welcome to Joe Biden's repair shop, where we put your car back exactly how it was 10 seconds before the wheels fell off"

[–] supersquirrel@sopuli.xyz 5 points 2 months ago

"....and then when you drive your car away from being repaired and realize it is still existentially broken we condescend you and tell you to be happy your car works at all because the other repair shop would have totally broken your car way worse!"

Trump is the #1 bastard for sure, followed by Reagan, Nixon, Wilson, and Jackson to round out the worst 5

Bush II killed a million people and destabilized the Middle East.

[–] rockSlayer@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 2 months ago

Don't worry, Dubya is still in my top 10

Hard truths

Obama was kind of nice, from an outsiders perspective. He's also still a respected man who gets invited to public speaking events.

[–] rockSlayer@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 2 months ago

He also bombed the shit out of the middle east and pioneered double tap strikes

[–] 0_o7@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 2 months ago

I'm sure putin gets invited in talking events with his cronies too bud, does that make him kind of nice too?

Go bark your war criminal apologist hogwash somewhere else.

On the one hand that sucks, on the other hand, sailors are habitually away from home for long stretches of time, and they are getting paid to do nothing right now.

I'd like to know what the exact circumstances of their detainment are, but we likely won't find out. It's possible the FBI gave them a deal like "if you stick around for the investigation, you'll get immunity".

[–] MagicShel@lemmy.zip 4 points 2 months ago

Maybe we should deport them.
