I feel like nightmares in media often involve a monster of some sort, but IME nightmares tend to be more grounded and involve someone I know personally doing something bad.

Funny nightmare story while we're here: I had one as a kid where some guy with a gun entered our house and told us to get out. We were forced out of our house and we had nothing we could do about it. For years I remembered this nightmare as a kinda absurd thing that your kid mind makes up, wouldn't it be scary if someone stole your house and you couldn't do anything about it?

Anyway, then I found out about Palestine.

I have a reoccurring nightmare where something is in the woods behind my house and it sounds human and it's calling out to me to come to it, but I have this dreadful feeling it's going to kill me. I've had this dream reoccur for years now.

That's interesting and it falls somewhere between supernatural and not.

Eerie as hell. Honestly, these more subtle nightmares, where the danger is vague and at the periphery, are some of my favorite to read about (not so much to actually have).

A rare reoccuring nightmare I have since childhood features me in a neverending storm avoiding and surviving a barrage of tornadoes, most being close calls and some hitting the area/building I'm in. I sometimes get them even as an adult.

For me it's usually either getting checkmated in one way or another. Like I'm going to fail out of college, I just did something fucked up, or I'm losing something precious. Otherwise I'm in a field of snakes/tarantulas like it's Megabonk.

I'm liable to fight humanoids who are people sized - super natural or otherwise. One time my dream punches weren't working so I went to grapple them and it worked so it wasn't real a nightmare.

nah, weird gravity and eternal darkness aside not supernatural as such (had a funny one where i opened my door into black hole (like stars and blackhole looming below the door) and i fell into it and things of that nature)

*(vague threats of something following do happen though, like dilapidated building with red splashes and noises behind, but i find them easier to reel in cause they are much less believable than my building collapsing or whatever), but i think i can vaguely remember this happening like 2-3 times, compared to falling down nightmares

I had a nightmare a few days ago that I was digging tunnels during a war, set explosives under an area, but then I took a peak above to see what was my target and I saw children.

Another nightmare I had was seeing NATO tanks (Leclerc) committing massacres and blowing up cars.

Other than war themes, most of my nightmares have me as the monster, hurting strangers and people close to me without being able to stop myself.

Also I saw a deathclaw in my nightmares once, which is close enough to a monster in a nightmare.

You know, I don't think I've ever had a nightmare where I'm hurting someone else. I guess if I'm psychoanalizing this stuff maybe it means you're very mindful about hurting others?

I've trained my dream self to go action hero mode anytime a nightmare tries to start shit, and it usually goes supernatural from there

had a recent dream where I was in a survival horror mansion full of ghosts and zombies throwing knives (just press dodge), managed to kite a boss zombie onto the roof where there was another boss; turns out, they were brothers, and so happy I reunited them that they both joined my party as allies skeleton-motorcycle

I've found I can sometimes go Riki-Oh when I dream. Just punch through the baddies like they're made of jello

I remember once where I turned into a demon or something as an adolescent child. Also weird and different dream, but they felt like they were supposed to be Satan or a stand-in... anyway we fucked, and at some point Santa banged me in a dream too. I should clarify, these last two weren't really a nightmare :3.

More often than not though it'd be sharks, like deep blue sharks. Or some dread of something chasing me and needing to run. Otherwise it's zombies, work nightmares, or flickering lights that signals I'm about to have a bad time. Or final destination esque scenarios.

One that I still remember when I was young was this light passing through the window and having it hit the blinds to create beams of light that moved with the entity. Then the light stops, the blinds open and there's this luminescent floating wraith, onryo, skeletal creature, peering into the room and then without warning, it lets out a haunting wall.

But lately it's been a whole lot of nothing. Last nightmare I can recall was in 2020 and I think I was upset that I hadn't gotten payment for ... Online accounting... from the two final presidential nominees... I think everything happened off screen or thankfully is a blur. Was not particularly fond of it but thought it was funny at least, especially since I wanted my bag. gangster-spongebob imo I think my brain was thinking about how fucked I was between the two choices AND I was at the time at a homeless shelter with no real privacy to relieve myself of pent up revolutionary spirits. Other than that idk, they certainly aren't my type. Not like Satan or Santa I guess. shrug-outta-hecks

No monsters ever since I learned to go sicko mode on them sicko-laser

dream goreyLast one a vampire disemboweled me and I still kept ripping him apart even more so

I've had a surprising amount of zombie apocalypse nightmares. It's strange. As a kid, I used to have various nightmares on the monster from Tremors, too, even though that's not exactly the scariest movie lol.

I've had other more mundane nightmares, too (spiders, losing teeth, didn't study for a test, etc).

I don't think I have nightmares at all. My dreams are like extremely long-winded nonsensical movie plots

Edit: actually I'm starting to remember some nightmares I had. My nightmares is when the movie plot turns into some abstract horror with loud noises and weird shapes

lol I think this is the exact movie playing in my brain every night

I've had a few:

  • A thing with a fleshy tetrahedron head (Creepy but ultimately harmless)
  • A "ringwraith" (Actually just a cloaked figure with invisibility powers that used them to go around killing people with a chain gun)
  • Little clay statue men with big Easter Island heads (They could be summoned with a ritual. The more people they killed, the more money the summoner would get. A couple of bandit-looking guys summoned them in hopes of paying for a $1500 car repair.)
  • The "Queen Bee" (Insect-like figure with wings, four slender arms, and a rigid, mask-like face. Cries as she kills you. If she kills you, she dies, and your corpse transforms into a new Queen Bee.)
  • A boy who was transformed by a science experiment into a grotesque gigantic biomechanical battleship that went around killing planets (he eventually got killed by a girl who transformed herself into an even bigger biomechanical ship after he devastated her planet. Once she'd gotten her revenge on him, she turned out to be pretty chill.)
