Within the same paragraph, this article's author simultaneously dismisses the RT audience score as right-wing review bombing, and then holds up the absurdly inflated RT critics rating, that is full of media shills whose primary function is to inflate ratings of the slop coming out of the major studios.

Well I'm a socialist, and a casual enjoyer of Star Trek i.e. not a Trekkie, and I thought this show was complete and utter dog shit.

It's a white label CW teen soap with a Star Trek label slapped on it.

The show's writers clearly either don't like Star Trek, don't understand it, or just don't care.

Oh no, does this mean I'm now MAGA?

Doesn't feel right to me. The premier didn't leave me wanting more. It feels like a step back towards Disco after the great leaps forward of Strange New Worlds and Lower Decks.

[–] reddig33@lemmy.world 16 points 6 days ago (1 children)

It’s strange that they doubled down on ”Discovery: The Sequel” and expected success. It reminds me of when everyone hated the Star Trek Enterprise theme song, so instead of replacing it the producers just “jazzed it up”.

[–] tiramichu@sh.itjust.works 6 points 5 days ago

And the "jazzed up" version just made it worse.

[–] The_Che_Banana@beehaw.org 10 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Eh...I thought it was a charming show. Not much substance, but charming.

[–] Encephalotrocity@feddit.online 8 points 6 days ago (1 children)

It felt like watching the WB. It's aiming for teen demo and I'm... not that.

[–] The_Che_Banana@beehaw.org 7 points 6 days ago

Yes. that's exactly it.

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 7 points 6 days ago (1 children)

any idea what is meant by backlash?

[–] Canconda@lemmy.ca 17 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

Its the word they use to fabricate engagement when in reality nobody is watching.

[–] etherphon@midwest.social 13 points 6 days ago (1 children)

I dunno about the attacks, I watched the first few and I thought it was okay but it's just another school/college/university/academy version of a show, doesn't feel like boldly going where no one has gone before. I don't have any problem with it persay just eh.

[–] Mongostein@lemmy.ca 5 points 5 days ago (1 children)

My friend says it reminds him of Harry Potter

[–] etherphon@midwest.social 2 points 4 days ago

Haha yeah a bit Harry Potter in Space.

[–] IWW4@lemmy.zip 6 points 5 days ago (1 children)

If by backlash, the article means people don’t want a terrible show, than yeah it is a backlash.

This show is just so bad.

[–] tiramichu@sh.itjust.works 4 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago) (1 children)

Lol yeah, as if to say it's somehow not the fault of the show that it's bad, but the fault of the audience for not liking it.

This is Paramount's song and dance for all the new Trek shows that fail to land. They get a few big names to say "It's Just Like The Shows You Love!" and then blame malicious actors for the poor reception.

It's so exhausting.

I watched the first episode thought it could go either way, but I liked it. Not sure what the hate is but maybe EP 2 and 3 will suck most first seasons of treks got a lot of hate, even TNG.

In fact the only good first seasons were SNW and TOS

[–] Squatcher@piefed.social 2 points 6 days ago (1 children)

I watched first episode of discovery it seemed good what goes so wrong? (I don't care about spoilers)

[–] Redacted@lemmy.zip 6 points 6 days ago (1 children)

For me it was way too quipy. Felt like i was watching a marvel movie.

[–] Squatcher@piefed.social 1 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Ok got it they marvel fied star trek

[–] Redacted@lemmy.zip 4 points 5 days ago

It really did feel like "Disney presents: Star Trek"

[–] PedroMaldonado@lemmy.world 2 points 6 days ago (6 children)

WTF? What do you people want????

[–] reddig33@lemmy.world 29 points 6 days ago (2 children)

A show about competent people exploring the universe?

[–] JessyKenning@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

They cancelled lower decks.

[–] TheAlbatross@lemmy.blahaj.zone 22 points 6 days ago

Yeah the competence porn of TNG is very comforting in this insane times.

[–] TheAlbatross@lemmy.blahaj.zone 21 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (3 children)

Star Trek Deep Space Nine 2, of course.

I want episodic sci-fi plots with an ensemble cast and minimal, yet still present, slow burn character growth and world building.

I want a show that in one episode is willing to say the entirety of American culture is wantonly racist and the next be about playing baseball in VR, all complete with semi-stage play-style, scenery chewing acting. Giamatti delivered on that part, to be fair, but it just felt so mismatched with the rest of the chaos.

[–] Redacted@lemmy.zip 11 points 6 days ago

I just want garrick back tbh, and quark. Those two completely stole the show.

[–] Prove_your_argument@piefed.social 9 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Come on, you were so close when you almost said Babylon 5.

[–] TheAlbatross@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 6 days ago (1 children)

I don't know what DS9's secret sauce is because I've tried to get into Babylon 5 a few times and it never hooks me. I don't think it can be just the cultural cache of Star Trek, but it's something.

Don't get me wrong man, I binge star trek routinely. I'm currently hopping between DS9 and Voyager.

B5 just hits harder in a different way. It elicits an emotional response with the finale that tops even the most soul crushing anime like Your lie in April and Angel Beats. It has tons of parallels to today's world and the story goes well beyond a bite sized episode.

It's got it's flaws. There are plenty of episodes that are rough patches especially in S1, and S5 can be very meh, but for it's time it's a marvel. In a world of sitcoms and one offs it delivered a story with tons of plots that go beyond just a two part episode. It's a show that feels way more modern in good ways despite the low resolution and relatively small budget.

Like any show though, it's not for everyone. It never got the mass appeal that star trek attained, but it feels like a much more realistic future than star trek will ever be unfortunately.

[–] CmdrShepard49@sh.itjust.works 8 points 6 days ago (3 children)

If we were only 4 episodes into DS9's original airing, people would be losing their minds complaining about how terrible of a show it is. The first season was terrible.

[–] tomenzgg@midwest.social 2 points 4 days ago

Compared to TNG's first season, it was prestige T. V. (O. K., maybe not that good; but I had no problem watching it without having to try again, later).

[–] IWW4@lemmy.zip 2 points 5 days ago

We were saying that.

That is a phenomenal point

[–] Rakonat@lemmy.world 3 points 5 days ago

Something that isn't form over substance.

Nu Trek is all about looking flashy without any real thought put past that. The stories and themes are poorly written and presented, characters that should be highly trained professionals acting like they just graduated high school last week and maybe skimmed the chapter names of their particular profession. Contradictory retcons of established lore for no real reason than the writer thought it would be cool.

[–] Tar_alcaran@sh.itjust.works 3 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I want more Strange New Worlds, not more Discovery.

[–] Mongostein@lemmy.ca 2 points 5 days ago (1 children)
[–] Tar_alcaran@sh.itjust.works 1 points 5 days ago

Or even post-voyager, that's fine too.

[–] IWW4@lemmy.zip 1 points 5 days ago

.. A show that is good.

This show is terrible.

[–] CmdrShepard49@sh.itjust.works -1 points 6 days ago

Agreed. We finally get a show set in the future with a cast that doesn't bring back characters we already know and people are allegedly up in arms about it. Perhaps they need another series set around ST:TOS with Spock and Kirk since we don't have enough of that already.

[–] CCMan1701A@startrek.website -1 points 4 days ago

This show is fine, but i hope they get back to space soon
