Showerthoughts

A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.

Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:

Rules

  1. All posts must be showerthoughts
  2. The entire showerthought must be in the title
  3. No politics
    • If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as "capitalism" and "communism". If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
    • A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
  4. Posts must be original/unique
  5. Adhere to Lemmy's Code of Conduct and the TOS

If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.

Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.

Pro tip: if you're going to shower at the gym make sure you have a towel BEFORE you get all wet

Just because:

A towel, [The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy] says, is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have.

Partly it has great practical value. You can wrap it around you for warmth as you bound across the cold moons of Jaglan Beta; you can lie on it on the brilliant marble-sanded beaches of Santraginus V, inhaling the heady sea vapors; you can sleep under it beneath the stars which shine so redly on the desert world of Kakrafoon; use it to sail a miniraft down the slow heavy River Moth; wet it for use in hand-to-hand-combat; wrap it round your head to ward off noxious fumes or avoid the gaze of the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal (such a mind-boggingly stupid animal, it assumes that if you can't see it, it can't see you); you can wave your towel in emergencies as a distress signal, and of course dry yourself off with it if it still seems to be clean enough.

Douglas Adams (The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy (Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, #1))

...and thanks for all the fish 😜 🐬🐬🐬

Hey, you sass that hoopy limer?

[–] presoak@lazysoci.al 11 points 2 months ago

The first useful thing we invented was the pointed stick.

Second was string.

Third the towel.

The towel hits a sweet spot. It's got development history. It's got archetypal grounding. It's the Zeus of inventions.

Only 116 days until Towel Day

Make sure you remember your lock combo before locking your belongings up when you take a shower. I came back to my locker and couldn't open it once. No phone, no glasses, just flip flops in a towel. Not a fun experience. Thankfully I remembered the code before too embarrassingly long.

[–] surewhynotlem@lemmy.world 4 points 2 months ago (1 children)

If the Internet has taught me anything, it's that a Masterlock can be easily opened with another Masterlock.

[–] Robust_Mirror@aussie.zone 2 points 2 months ago

But you need the code to THAT masterlock to use it to open the first masterlock.

Alternative pro tip: forget to go to the gym, have towel

[–] Squirrelsdrivemenuts@lemmy.world 7 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I've forgotton a towel when I went swimming before. Ended up using my shirt as a towel and dressing in just my sweater.

[–] tyrant@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Yeah I ended up using gym t shirt that was fairly clean since I didn't do cardio. It all worked out in the end

[–] Aussiemandeus@aussie.zone 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

You trained without a towel?

[–] tyrant@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

Yeah, I don't really sweat when I lift. If I'm doing cardio I'll bring a little sweat towel with me

[–] Krauerking@lemy.lol 4 points 2 months ago

That is like the exact opposite of the thought you want to have in the shower.
Perfect.

[–] tyler@programming.dev 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I’ve done that before. It sucked cause it was also 14°F out. So I had to drive home in the cold while wet.

[–] tyler@programming.dev 1 points 2 months ago

No, but I did go in shorts and a t shirt. So I had to leave in those clothes too.

[–] Rhynoplaz@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago

Wanna go get hiiiiiiiigh?

[–] Agility0971@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago

Just use the curtains

[–] presoak@lazysoci.al 2 points 2 months ago

Maybe you could squeegee yourself on the funky floor tiles

[–] Mesophar@pawb.social 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Do you usually just walk back from the shower to your locker dripping water everywhere?

[–] tyrant@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

My gym has separate little shower/changing rooms

[–] Mesophar@pawb.social 1 points 2 months ago

That is much more understandable xD also, a little jealous, that sounds nice

[–] SolidShake@lemmy.world 0 points 2 months ago (2 children)

This is a Facebook thought imo

[–] tyrant@lemmy.world 5 points 2 months ago

I don't have Facebook though. And I was all wet. Seemed appropriate

[–] orbituary@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I don't think 90% of the people who post on this comm have any idea how Showerthoughts works.

[–] ripcord@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

How does this one go against the community description...?

[–] orbituary@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Classically "Showerthoughts" were more along the lines of the Philosoraptor meme topics. I even found one that both fits this description and the literal comm name. However, people in this comm tend to take the concept super literally. Incidentally, a trend that seems to pervade most humor these days, too.

[–] ripcord@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago

That may be what reddit said they were, but this is not reddit. Most of the ones that people complain about fit the community description just fine.
