Nah gimmie that fucking toothbrush /s 😆

[–] bdonvr@thelemmy.club 5 points 3 days ago

Hold on, it's my turn with our toothbrush next.

And only one of these categories is inherently theft.

It's the toothbrush, isn't it?

I think the term "private property" needs a rebrand to clearly distinguish it from personal property, especially since the term "private individual" refers to a single person.

A.Word.A.Day with Anu Garg

verbicide

PRONUNCIATION: (VUHR-buh-syd)

MEANING: noun:

  1. The deliberate distortion or destruction of the meaning of a word.
  2. A person who deliberately distorts the meaning of a word.

ETYMOLOGY: From Latin verbum (word) + -cide (killing). Earliest documented use: 1826.

NOTES: Verbicide thrives in political slogans, press releases, and corporate memos, where words like freedom, choice, reform, and family are repeatedly assaulted until they confess to meanings they never had. Also see, Words from 1984 that are now a part of the language.

USAGE: “So Olbreht gets away with verbicide; there are also mistakes of grammar I will spare you.” John Simon; Balkan Dreams; The Weekly Standard (Washington, DC); Jun 27, 2011.

See more usage examples of verbicide in Vocabulary.com’s dictionary.

These definitions are almost 200 years old.

Were they commonly understood the way you mean them by the general proletariat 200 years ago? Genuine question, not trying to catch anyone out or anything

Verbicide's first written use is recorded to have occurred in the 1820s. Which funnily enough was 200 years ago. Unfortunately, due to only a statistically insignificant number of people being aware of its meaning in the 1820s, your initial point is null and void...

It's perfectly normal for a working glossary of terms to evolve within a limited interested group and then spread outside of that group if their utility aids the comprehension and discussion of current concepts.

I think they were referring to "Private Property", the victim of verbicide.

They're asking "When did the meaning of private property get assassinated"

[–] thatsTheCatch@lemmy.nz 2 points 3 days ago

That's why I like the terms "personal possessions" or "personal belongings" because it completely separates it from "property" so the slogan "property is theft!" more obviously only applies to private property

Question: Unless one fully owns their home, would it not still be private property?

The bank is in control unless that mortgage is paid.

[–] Sarcasmo220@lemmy.ml 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

What if homes were affordable to where you didn't need a mortgage because housing is a basic right 🤯

[–] Megaman_EXE@beehaw.org 2 points 2 days ago

Haha yeah that would be nice. Hopefully one day
