This one is deeply frustrating for me because fucking everything is politics.

I don't just mean the physical either. Politics isn't just a guy in a suit giving a speech. Roads are political. The food you eat is politics,

And in a broader sense, the concept of beauty is political.

"Politics" is inherent in your understanding of yourself as a person. So when someone says they aren't "political", I chalk it up tp ignorance. But in reality, it usually boils down to immaturity.

Considering this is lemmy people will nod their heads in agreement until he mentions prostitutes (see other comment in this thread)

Idk, prostitute is a victim of the system just as the abandoned child mentioned right after.

[–] Manmoth@lemmy.ml 1 points 2 months ago

I agree that prostitutes are victims. There is a narrative now that prostitution can somehow be a real job and not degenerate and self-debasing.

We’re all too deeply concerned with the price of beans to notice the sex work 🤷

[–] Manmoth@lemmy.ml 1 points 2 months ago

There's no such thing as 'sex work'. There is prostitution and pornographic exploitation.

[–] SarahValentine@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Heeyyy, what's he got against prostitutes?

[–] Psaldorn@lemmy.world 14 points 2 months ago (1 children)

The socioeconomic situation lead to by ignorance forces people into prostitution. Not that prostitutes are bad themselves.

Appreciate the measured response. Thank you.

do you actually believe most prostitutes do it willingly and not because they are desperate? it's an exploitative business and the rampant human trafficking is just the norm. it hammers down the patriarchy. the amound of sex workers who do it unwillingly greatly exceeds the amount of voluntary sex workers.

capitalism exacerbates the issues greatly and enables the suffering.

No? I didn't say that.

These things are true. Still doesn't make it okay to shit on prostitutes existing like they're all a symptom of a problem. That dehumanizes them and engenders hostility.

I was mostly being cheeky in my initial comment but this reply is so hostile I felt the need to be serious for a minute. Further replies will not be read.

if i came off as an ass i am sorry, i probably misinterpreted your comment and classified it as the 'unconditional & uncritical support of sex work'-kind of take that unfortunately is still prevalent - especially in left-adjacent circles (looking at my former pdl-comrades in germany)

Reminds me of this passage from Gramsci.

I wouldn't really describe corrupt officials and lackeys of exploitative multinational corporations as "politically illiterate"?

They're kind of the ones who run the world. Sometimes they're illiterate, and somethings they're Machiavellian freaks.

[–] Bademantel@lemmy.world 7 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I think he is not saying that they themselves are politically illiterate but that they are enabled by political illiteracy. This ignorance is what prevents society from freeing itself from those abominations.

[–] queermunist@lemmy.ml 6 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Oh. I guess I'm illiterate. I read it as saying that being politically illiterate leads to becoming those things, not that it causes them.

[–] Bademantel@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago

Well, as long as it's not policial illiteracy, it's not the worst ;)

[–] heftig@beehaw.org 1 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

He meant that the corrupt can accumulate wealth and power because so many people are politically illiterate and do not oppose them, even though it would be in their interest.
