Ehhh, generally normal bugs are too small to reliably seperate the meat from the shell. Most people wouldn't enjoy shrimp, crab, lobster, etc. If they ate it with the shell still on.

[–] kryptonianCodeMonkey@lemmy.world 21 points 1 month ago

Yeah, it's not the meat, to me. It's the crunch. No thank you. Also, we rarely eat all parts of the shellfish. We typically remove or otherwise avoid the digestive tract, for example. Can't do that when they are tiny, but the same volume of crickets has as much poop in it as the equivalent volume of shrimp.

[–] Zexks@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

Ehh you see how many people go through dozens of pounds of craw fish each one only containing a half a fingernail of meat.

[–] Deceptichum@quokk.au 1 points 4 weeks ago

Lots of people eat softshell crab. Same goes for shrimp deep fried with it. People love crunchy food.

[–] ramble81@lemmy.zip 21 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Never understood people who gatekeepe food. If it tastes good. Why not?

Way to be pedantic. You know that my focus was on items that aren’t specifically going to poison or kill you. Why are you like that?

[–] Bytemeister@lemmy.world 14 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Why are you like that?

Lead. Paint.

Take a step back and chill out for a moment. It's the internet and more specifically it's a channel for meme and laughs. Pointing out ironic edge-case scenarios that give a moments pause to consider what was said is kinda the whole point of this space.

No harm, no foul btw. I don't have an axe to grind about you or your comments here, I just thought of a funny and dumb thing to write in a space dedicated to posting funny and dumb things.

[–] ramble81@lemmy.zip 9 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Fair enough. I was letting meat-space get in my way from something earlier.

Water under the bridge. I hope your day is filled with levity and mirth.

and now I have to go look up words

[–] Zamboni_Driver@lemmy.ca -1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Eating babies won't poison or kill you. That's a pretty messed up opinion that you have there. Anything goes as long as it doesn't poison or kill you? Y'all need Jesus.

[–] ramble81@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Is he tasty? Don’t Catholics believe they are literally eating the body of Christ and drinking his blood?

[–] Zamboni_Driver@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 month ago

How the should I know. I said y'all need Jesus, not religion.

The best part about those chips is that they're free!

I can't be fucking bothered to take the digestive tract full of shit out of this bug, is it ok? Will you still eat it?

Absolutely!

Patrician take: normal bugs are delicious, too.

[–] CallMeButtLove@lemmy.world 9 points 1 month ago

Shrimps is bugs

[–] njm1314@lemmy.world 9 points 1 month ago

Shit find me a bug that tastes as good as them shrimps and I'll eat it.

[–] Mavvik@lemmy.ca 7 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Ive only tried crickets and they're very bland compared to shellfish

[–] BurnedDonutHole@ani.social 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

It's all about the cooking and seasoning. I tried fried ones they were like chips. Goes very well with beer.

In my experience the boiled bugs usually tastes bad at least to me.

[–] Mavvik@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 month ago

I had seasoned roasted ones, but they are farmed and probably fed a diet of oats so they taste pretty oaty. I compare them to, for example, roasted chickpeas which are also a relatively high protein salted snack and I find the roasted chickpeas are far more flavourful and dont require as much seasoning to bring out that flavour.

[–] Cethin@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 month ago

I'd argue the same is true for shrimp. It's all about how it's cooked and seasoned. They can taste pretty good, but plain they just exist, not tasting good or bad.

[–] rumschlumpel@feddit.org 4 points 1 month ago

Evolutionally, sea bugs came first!

[–] Valmond@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 1 month ago

Seafood is delicious!

[–] IronBird@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago (2 children)

i do wonder if bug-protein could gain ground in the west, far as animal protein goes it's got to be the most effecient to farm doesn't it?

[–] Medic8teMe@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 month ago

We can buy cricket powder at our grocery store in small town Canada.

[–] VitoRobles@lemmy.today 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I think it's all branding.

I still think about how they used to feed lobster to prisoners as punishment.

[–] otter@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 month ago

With respect, that's a widely debunked myth. 🙇🏽‍♂️

[–] stiffyGlitch@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

Jim Gaffigan agrees

[–] otter@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 month ago

Don't even get me started on truffles...

[–] Fleur_@aussie.zone 1 points 1 month ago
