Pulled these today. Only got through peeling half of the gandule pods. I'll be handing out starfruit to the neighbors.

Tell me you are either Puerto Rican or Dominican without telling me you are Puerto Rican or Dominican.

Gandules = Pigeon Peas

Carambola = Star fruit

EDIT: Ah, Puerto Rican spouse. That'll do it. Congratulations on enjoying "arroz con gandules" you lucky dog.

Nice harvest! I heard starfruit's grow a huge amount of fruit each time, and here in Malaysia we have to wrap it else it will get lots of pest. Originally i wanted to have one in my garden but after hearing that, i really have no time for that. Too bad cus i really like starfruit

We're way too far north for starfruit, but you're coming at this from the right angle. Our local fruit trees (apple, pear, peach, etc) produce a ton of fruit. Like 100-200 pounds / 45-90 kg worth for a single teenage tree. If you don't stay on top of them they'll attract yellow jackets and the trees themselves require a decent amount of pruning annually.

Fruit trees sound fantastic to have, but they're a lot of work.

Meanwhile here in the north, all I'm harvesting today is a couple inches of snow.

You can flavor it with maple syrup!

Why is the picture upside down?

You sure you're not from Australia?

[–] FreshLight@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 month ago

Not entirely. Maybe it's downside up even.

Looks good,
All indigenous?
What is The Gandule?

Our Star Fruit tree is not indigenous as far as I know, but there are so many in our neighborhood that no neighbor will ever take one, let buy one.

Well. This is south Florida.... I've had gandule trees since I married my Puerto Rican wife. They grow like weeds here.....super easy. Gandules are beans from the pods you see in the bag. Arroz con gandules is a beloved Puerto Rican dish.

The starfruit is also super easy to grow here. Matches the PR island climate.

Getting a harvest from these 2 down here almost feels like cheating its so easy.

Funny thing is I also live in South Florida., just north of Homestead-Fl. City, next to Everglades.

All you said is right, but unfortunately, they are not indigenous.

oh yea, carambolas are amazing. I press them into juice and mix with other stuff, usually passion fruit or orange
