General Discussion for politics in the UK.
Please don't post to both !uk_politics@feddit.uk and !unitedkingdom@feddit.uk .
Pick the most appropriate, and put it there.

Posts should be related to UK-centric politics, and should be either a link to a reputable news source for news, or a text post on this community.

Opinion pieces are also allowed, provided they are not misleading/misrepresented/drivel, and have proper sources.

If you think "reputable news source" needs some definition, by all means start a meta thread. (These things should be publicly discussed)

Posts should be manually submitted, not by bot. Link titles should not be editorialised.

Disappointing comments will generally be left to fester in ratio, outright horrible comments will be removed.
Message the mods if you feel something really should be removed, or if a user seems to have a pattern of awful comments.

Make them free for everybody for crying out loud. Free public transport is cheaper for everybody. Cars are fucking expensive for people (taxes, insurance, ...), for governments (loads of subsidies, road maintenance, pollution, ...), and every car is unused for 99% of its existence.

Drop subsidies for cars, make public transport free, and your ridership will go through the roof, pollution will measurably go down, businesses will see more foot traffic, neighborhoods will become more lively, it might even have health benefits because people will walk to public transport and fatal traffic accidents will decrease significantly. It might even allow people to see each other more.

People of every age group will benefit too.

this. its like so. someone turns 23 and can suddenly afford it better? so many benefit programs make sense to be for all. get rid of the means test and tax wealth.

Honestly, public transport should be free.

Everything except that fucking stupid bullshit gondola thing in East London.

Really good policy.

It does beg the question why the handful of councils they already control haven't enacted it if...

He added: "Green councillors elected in May will be using their influence to implement this scheme in their areas and we will be applying political pressure at a national level for a scheme recommended by the transport select committee last year to be made real.

They need the government to fund it.

Absolutely, and so electing Green councillors in May won't enable them to implement it in their areas.

This is what properly fucks me off with Polanski. It's a great policy, but like all populists, saying stuff like this means he's either stupid, or he's ~~lying~~ knowingly misrepresenting the power councillors have.

It's fundamentally unserious.

Like you say, it's what populists do. Pressure the people with actual power through the media.
