Welcome to the News community!

Rules:

1. Be civil

Attack the argument, not the person. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on.

2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.

Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.

Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Clickbait titles use hyperbolic language and do not accurately describe the article content. When necessary, post titles may be edited, clearly marked with [brackets], but may never be used to editorialize or comment on the content.

5. Only recent news is allowed.

Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.

6. All posts must be news articles.

No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials, videos, blogs, press releases, or celebrity gossip will be allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.

7. No duplicate posts.

If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

8. Misinformation is prohibited.

Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.

9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.

All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.

10. Don't copy entire article in your post body

For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.

On Insurrection Act, Trump says he doesn't think he 'needs it right now' in Minneapolis While speaking to reporters today, Trump said that he would use the Insurrection Act in Minneapolis if he “needed it”.

“I don’t think there’s any reason right now to use it, but if I needed it, I’d use it,” he added.

Earlier this week, Trump threatened to invoke the centuries old law, that allows the use of military forces to quell a domestic rebellion or invasion, in response to the protests against federal immigration agents in Minneapolis.

A reminder that George HW Bush was the last president to use the act during the deadly 1992 Los Angeles riots.

In short someone informed him that in all likelihood the legal battle will end in a failure

[–] Skyrmir@lemmy.world 30 points 1 month ago

Again, it would fail again.

[–] halcyoncmdr@piefed.social 19 points 1 month ago (1 children)

That's never stopped him before.

[–] green_red_black@slrpnk.net 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

And yet backed out of Cali when the courts have told him so.

The NG in DC ultimately just did trash collection.

And in Chicago he had the NG stay in barracks before sending them home due to the courts ruling against him.

For a guy that says he will use military force he seems to hold back and let the protest movements win out in the end

[–] halcyoncmdr@piefed.social 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

That's just because his end goal of having them mow down the protesters still isn't something that can be done yet without everyone turning against it.

Meanwhile has the Green Shirts out and about with the tacit approval in doing just that (yes I know no actual massacre has happened by ICE, but given how the Administration treats their Mass Deportation Efforts I highly doubt they are waiting for the winds to turn in their approval.)

And by the time the courts had decided that he would have arrested tens of thousands and whisked them away to ICE blacksites. Maybe one or two would get freed due to a media storm, but his administration would continue to hound and harass those few.

Its very obvious the courts don’t stop Trumps regime, and he does whatever fickle thing he wants at the time and talks shit the other 99%.

[–] green_red_black@slrpnk.net 2 points 1 month ago

Does whatever he wants and doesn’t get the results he wants.

You are correct in thousands already detained and deported. But Trump’s whole Mass Deportation is to remove all non-citizens (and citizens that are not subservient while we are at it.) but at best could only get what 10% of the undocumented population?

TBC 10% is still a lot (even just one is bad.) but it’s not the grand vision Trump boasts doing.

Polls. I think it's polls. He doesn't care about losing legal battles, but he is afraid of what this action will do to him in the polls.

[–] green_red_black@slrpnk.net 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

And yet still doing stuff that makes him look bad in the polls anyways. Unless I missed he finally had a moment out of the red while still playing Supreme Leader

[–] manxu@piefed.social 1 points 1 month ago

My impression is that he is totally out of touch with reality. He thinks something will play well, and then is completely surprised that people hate him for it. Like, he got elected because he was going to be tough on immigration, how dare people complain because he's tough on immigration? Look, he's even got a woman ---murdered--- fatally shot while she was Standing In The Way, that's gotta count for something, right? Please, clap!

[–] SuiXi3D@fedia.io 4 points 1 month ago

Probably worse. It would end in a civil war.

I think the Jan 6 attack was a better case to justify the Insurrection Act, since you know they actually violently forced their way into a government building with malice intent.

Minneapolis is mostly protesting and peaceful noncompliance. I haven't heard anything about riots or attacks carried out on law enforcement.

[–] LibertyLizard@slrpnk.net 17 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

Better perhaps but still a weak case. The j6 riot was a singular event that was handled by normal law enforcement. The insurrection act in my opinion shouldn't exist but to the extent that it has a purpose it's for like civil wars or other ongoing situations where the feds have lost control over entire regions for a period of time.

[–] Corkyskog@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 month ago

Like if a gang or something somehow took over an entire city and forced the local government out.

[–] corsicanguppy@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 month ago

I don't think law enforcement is on-scene. It's just ICE, their victims, and people on-scene to witness and chastise the aggressors. No law enforcement there -- I hear it's mainly proud boys and the like.

[–] 5oap10116@lemmy.world 28 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Hes just teasing it. Its too early to justify canceling elections with it.

[–] Fredselfish@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

He going wait until November

[–] 5oap10116@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

Probably some time early to mid October. Maybe throw some false flag type deal. It cant be just days before. That's too on the nose.

[–] frongt@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 month ago

Yup. This is to get us used to the prospect.

TACO

He wants MN to capitulate just enough so he can use the Insurrection Act to look like a strong man.

We all know he is a fucking coward, weak, pathetic, a shitstain of a human being. Give him hell, MN!

"Somehow you people still haven't taken the bait so we have to back away from that threat for a minute."

"We're gonna try threatening your elected leaders with obstruction, maybe dox a few more of our own agents by total accident, see if we can find any more CIA trained child soldiers in a tight spot looking for work, and then keep poking the bear while we circle back around."
