Sure, It shouldn't make a difference.. but it's a perfect example of privilege to think that it doesn't.. it's like a rich person saying money doesn't matter... :-/

Here's the thing about race....it doesn't fucking matter.

Maybe If you’re white. Everything happening in the US right now makes it clear that your race does matter when it comes to your safety.

Race wouldn’t matter. Except for all the racists. My skin is white. When I’m around only others who share that trait, many of them show their true colors thinking they’re in good company. They just fucking tell on themselves.

Or some of them will make comments like yours.

It sure as hell matters and has mattered for centuries. If you're white and wealthy, you have carte blache to do what you want to do essentially. If you're poor, you're not as stopped as often as a POC. If you're not white, like clearly not white, you're already mistreated in this country. If it didn't matter we wouldn't have needed the civil rights movement. We wouldn't have to worry about them abolishing its legislation either. So yes, it matters a FUCKING lot.

It's highly common in latino families. We are taught to assimilate. Marry white means success. If you act good enough you will be accepted as one of the white people. A lot of Gen X and Millennials were never taught how to speak spanish. Many latinos claim to be more Spaniard then south American. That's why a lot of latinos pull the ladder up when they become successful. They think they "made it" and are accepted among white people.

It's one thing to say it doesn't matter, it's another to actually try to go out and make it not matter, because the way our society works right now - especially in the last few years - it absolutely matters. The only way it's going to change is if we go out and fight to earn equality for everyone, and even when we do that we'll still need to be vigilant to make sure shit like this doesn't start happening again.

White people are treated like blonde girls. There's a slight extra layer you're treated with. Even if it doesn't make sense. Unfortunately that's where we are. Some people aspire to be white. If you've ever heard of the baseball player Sammy Sosa, a Hall of Fame level player, he's white now. Skin bleaching is a thing. Many accused Michael Jackson of the same thing, though he claimed a medical reason. One of the books that a lot of kids read in high school, or at least they did in mine, is also about a black girl who dreams of growing up to be white (The Bluest Eye, I never actually read this book so this characterization might not be fair).
