Showerthoughts

A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.

Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:

Rules

  1. All posts must be showerthoughts
  2. The entire showerthought must be in the title
  3. No politics
    • If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as "capitalism" and "communism". If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
    • A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
  4. Posts must be original/unique
  5. Adhere to Lemmy's Code of Conduct and the TOS

If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.

Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.

Nah, it'll just make sure they lobby the government so AI has to have a pro-religion and anti-lgbtq bias. Do we really need more Groks?

[–] Deceptichum@quokk.au 9 points 19 hours ago

Don’t spread homophobic bullshit. That’s not a win.

[–] yermaw@sh.itjust.works 2 points 14 hours ago

Tell them it makes the tower of babel look like a sandcastle

Only the followers believe the propaganda. The leaders don't actually believe it, they use it to control their flock of stupids. And they only listen to their leaders.

[–] Nioxic@lemmy.dbzer0.com 12 points 1 day ago (1 children)

This is why religion was invented to begin with

probably, but you're reinforcing their stupid wrong notions that either of those things are bad. even if it were possible to "make someone gay"

people don't "become gay" any more than they "become straight"

[–] atopi@piefed.blahaj.zone -1 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

isnt that a possible effect of hrt?

[–] U7826391786239@lemmy.zip 1 points 9 hours ago* (last edited 9 hours ago) (1 children)

i don't know enough about hrt to answer that question, but i can tell you that i know people on hrt (trans and not) who haven't "switched orientations" because of it

[–] atopi@piefed.blahaj.zone 2 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

as far as i know, its possible(not guaranteed) to lose attraction to a gender or gain attraction to a gender after starting HRT

[–] WorldsDumbestMan@lemmy.today 1 points 2 hours ago

At that point, why not just go for both orientations? If you were like, comfortable with one, then became comfortable with another. Like, what is stopping them, social shame? Some straight relations bullshit?

Using eldritch runes etched in silicon to invoke a pale imitation of a living being is basically already summoning demons

[–] lordbritishbusiness@lemmy.world 4 points 22 hours ago

We do traditionally call programs working in the 'background' daemons. Mostly after Maxwell's Daemon but the pioneers of computing knew what they were about.

[–] worhui@lemmy.world 3 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

Just tell them it's stopping people from reading scripture and interpreting Jesus without the holyspirt. People are turning to AI assuming it's Gods word and AI companies won't stop it.

[–] Cevilia@lemmy.blahaj.zone 0 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

Most Xtians have never read the bible.

If they had, they'd advocate for it to be banned. Think of the content it contains. Think of the children! Oh! The vapours!

[–] worhui@lemmy.world 1 points 8 hours ago

Evangelicals are the specific exception. Scripture is gods holy word and how he shows them he loves them. it is a physical manifestation of gods love that they can experience anytime.

They take pride in reading and having memorization events. Anything getting in the way of that is SIN.

[–] Chozo@fedia.io 8 points 1 day ago (12 children)

As a Satanist, I detest the comparison to AI.

Someone needs to make a BIBLE AI. Say that it's totally based on the Bible and then program it to slowly change their beliefs.

Reminds me of my first day of intro to programming my first semester of freshman year at a small Christian Reformed college.

It opened with prayer and then a lecture on how technology is inherently evil. Then we started writing a java applet.

I applied to a state school within 2 weeks of starting.

I mean, it will literally steal your soul. Using LLMs changes you. It degrades your skills. Its sycophancy harms your ability to interact with actual human beings with opinions of their own. It makes you feel like you are never wrong. And use it enough, and it can literally drive you mad.

LLMs are the closest real thing to a malevolent demon that will steal your soul.

Tell them that asking AI a question is just like consulting a ouija board. The answers are coming from the same plane.

[–] IWW4@lemmy.zip 6 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Evangelicals are wild. There was one who walked dogs in my neighborhood.

Well someone had left a Monster can sitting on their front steps. The dog walker saw this and holy hell.

She left a single spaced margin to margin three page letter outlining how the Monster logo was the pichfork of satan upside down, it’s escalated to the dog walker finding facebook pages and finally threatening people with a gun in a grocery store parking lot.

Needless to say, she isn’t walking dogs in the neighborhood anymore.

they're batshit insane, but it is kinda fun fucking with these people

My ultra-religious mother "heard from someone" that AI "is the devil" so she wouldn't use it. That's great. Unfortunately, it made her really scared of everything. She was super anxious because AI was in the news all the time.

I really don't want her to use AI, because she already has such a hard time distinguishing fantasy from reality. But, I still had to try to explain to her that LLMs are just fancy auto-complete, and how often they get things wrong to reduce her stress level. I hope she continues not to use them, but now I hope she just shakes her head and sighs when someone else uses one, instead of thinking they're letting evil into their bodies.

We joke but the right wing fascists literally use strategies like this to gain christian support.

[–] 9point6@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Using the word "convince" means you might not fully realise what you're facing.

You can't convince the brainwashed, it's not about what is said, but rather who said it. Unless you're one of the authority figures they take their instructions from, there's nothing you can say to convince them because as far as they're concerned, you're just a lyin' lib'rul Satanist or some other bullshit.

But the people telling them how to think or feel want it and have a way better budget than you.

But Peter Thiel said we need the technology to restrain the antichrist.

[–] violentfart@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

Unlikely. They like all the new “features”.
