President Donald Trump claimed early Saturday that the U.S. had spirited Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro out of the country and taken him into custody, marking a dramatic escalation in the Trump administration’s regime change efforts.

Hours after airstrikes lit up the night sky across the Venezuelan capital of Caracas, Trump claimed credit for the attacks and said that Maduro had been taken into U.S. custody.

“The United States of America has successfully carried out a large scale strike against Venezuela and its leader, President Nicolas Maduro, who has been, along with his wife, captured and flown out of the country,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “This operation was done in conjunction with U.S. Law Enforcement.”

The U.S. has not made such a direct intervention in Latin America since the invasion of Panama in 1989 to depose military leader Manuel Noriega.

Asked what the future held for the Venezuelan people on Saturday morning, Trump said the U.S. would decide its fate. “We’re making that decision now. We can’t take a chance on letting somebody else run it,” Trump said on Fox News. “So we’re making that decision now. We’ll be involved in it very much.”

Russia takes Ukraine

The U.S. takes Venezuela

China takes Taiwan

If one fascist can take over one country why can't any fascist take over any country he chooses? It's a new fascist world order.

Not disagreeing with the sentiment, but Taiwan would prove more challenging assuming the US defends their interests in the country. But who knows, I could equally imagine pooh bear 'gifting' trump a hotel and calling it an even trade.

Because Russia can't take Ukraine.

I thought the situation with Venezuela was familiar. Trump just copied Putin's homework and changed just a few things.

It seems like maybe Putin was involved with this shit show as well.

Venezuelan Vice President Delcy Rodriguez is in Russia, four sources familiar with her movements said on Saturday, after President Donald Trump said President Nicolas Maduro had been seized by U.S. forces after an attack on the country.

Her brother, Jorge Rodriguez, the head of the national assembly, is in Caracas, three sources with knowledge of his whereabouts said.

LOL, what a surprise. Whenever he does something that looks like could hurt Russia we later learn it actually benefits them.

I was actually wondering what was the point of removing Maduro while keeping the old government.

Wouldn't surprise me. Trump thinks him and Putin are buddies. Trump is one big shitty puppet, after all.

Instead of getting the new world order we wanted, mom says this is the new world order we already have at home.

[–] _chris@lemmy.world 24 points 6 days ago

This is so much fucking bullshit. This is not what any sane person wants.

World wars have started over much less. Trump, the “president of peace”, is likely leading us into World War III.
