My parents are paying 38$ a month for 2tb of iCloud storage, and I want to help them save some money. Does anyone know some cheaper cloud photo storage programs that are more private and cheaper? I would be open to a NAS but I have had unreliable results with them in the past. Thank you.

They don’t pay 38$ for just iCloud storage.

If they’re paying that much they likely have Apple One highest tier which includes AppleTV, Apple Fitness+, Apple Music, Apple News+, and Apple Arcade in addition to the iCloud storage at 2TB.

If they only need iCloud storage and don’t need any of those other services, you should just move them to a lower iCloud account that is enough storage for them. It will be affordable and simpler.

This. Also, OP if you use an iPhone, you can join an Apple family with your parents and get access to all these services yourself for the $38 they are paying.

Not sure that amount makes sense. 2tb is 9.99/mo, 6tb is still cheaper at 32.99.

Can they make do with 2tb? That’s a lot, even for heavy users. Self hosted is always an option, but that’s going to cost not-zero in electricity, plus the tech support. 2tb for 9.99 would be my suggestion.

Does it need to be US? If not, there is Kdrive Solo (Swiss): 5€/month for 3Tb https://www.infomaniak.com/en/ksuite/kdrive/prices. It' snot dedicated photo storage, but their app can backup photos from the phone (I take very little pictures so I have no idea how valuable it is for that purpose).

Edit: for the sake of completion and as a disclaimer, I'm a paid customer but I don't use their KDrive offering, I use their 'Ksuite +' at approx 1.60€/month which offers 1Tb Drive (storage can be increased to 6Tb) and also includes email and a few other perks: https://www.infomaniak.com/en/ksuite/myksuite/prices

What do they use it for? Just the photos/videos?

I sync all such things to home using either Syncthing (Möbius on iOS) or Resilio Sync. No cloud service required. Then it's all backed up with my home backup.

Its nearly instant when I take a photo. It means I can manage my photos with my laptop rather than my phone.

They both work by installing the app on your PC and your phone, then configuring a sync job for whatever you want to sync, both have a default photo backup job in them.

Yeah, just photos and videos. I want to switch them to a different service because its so expensive

Hetzner provide managed Nextcloud servers. 5 euros for one TB. Can backup everything including contacts.

If it’s pure photo storage, Ente is the recommended service by PrivacyGuides. Not sure if they have a 3Tb plan though.

I’m self hosting Ente connected to an external S3 bucket for photos and videos.
