3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.

Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.

7. No duplicate posts.

If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

8. Misinformation is prohibited.

Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.

9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.

All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.

Donald Trump welcomed 2026 with a glitzy bash at his Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach where he auctioned off a freshly painted portrait of Jesus Christ for $2.75m and said his new year’s resolution was a wish for “peace on Earth”.

The portrait of Jesus had been painted onstage by artist Vanessa Horabuena who, the president said, was “one of the greatest artists anywhere in the world”.

Trump’s flow of superlatives continued as Horabuena tackled the large black canvas with a paintbrush as a band launched into a slow rendition of Hallelujah.

The picture sold for $2.75m to a woman in a top hat. Revellers at the gala included former adviser Rudy Giuliani; the homeland security secretary, Kristi Noem; the Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, and his wife, Sara; the Emirati billionaire Hussain Sajwani; Brett Ratner, director of Amazon’s forthcoming Melania documentary; House Republican Tom Emmer; and Jeanine Pirro, attorney general for the District of Columbia.

YSK: Artwork overpricing is a great way to funnel money around without much oversight.

[–] Mirshe@lemmy.world 16 points 3 months ago

Yup. Antiquities and artwork are both prime movers of cash if you don't want people to see what you're doing.

AKA money laundering. You would think that the orange felon's crypto money laundering scams would be enough, but nooo.

[–] Corkyskog@sh.itjust.works 5 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Also the ballroom is most likely another money laundering grift, I bet it won't even be built.

[–] pentastarm@piefed.ca 1 points 3 months ago

And that stupid arch he wants to build too.

[–] Pyr_Pressure@lemmy.ca 2 points 3 months ago

It's the perfect thing too, because everyone knows that's exactly what it is, even the cops and government, but since only rich people are able to do it no one does a thing about it.

If they saw a poor person pay $1M for a painting they'd shut that down real quick though.

Lol. I had to go back to the article and verify I wasn't just seeing things.

Good job!!

So someone bought a hastily-painted Jesus on Black Velvet painting for $2.75 mill? How do people this stupid get so much money?

[–] Insekticus@aussie.zone 22 points 3 months ago

I subscribe to the theory that rich people use this cheap, shitty art to hide transactions of illegal things in real life.

Ol Trumpy is probably selling child sex slaves to friends, and this is how he gets paid for it.

[–] Hermit_Lailoken@lemmy.world 9 points 3 months ago

It is probably a bribe.

Someone was able to donate nearly 3 million to the sitting president without anyone batting an eye.

It did exactly what it was supposed to do.

Why does Jesus Look like Glen Benton?

[–] simulacra_procession@lemmy.today 20 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Something something camels, needles. Hilarious irony

[–] hateisreality@lemmy.world 4 points 3 months ago (1 children)

My favorite part of this, beside Jesus looking like Glenn Benton of Decide with the cross, is some Churches are preaching Camels where lap sized and the Bible meant some huge needle...

Goddamn fools

[–] JeeBaiChow@lemmy.world 3 points 3 months ago

'Theres no I in needle! It's a trick question to fool the libs!'

[–] Bob_Robertson_IX@discuss.tchncs.de 17 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Holy White Jesus with Blue Eyes! She even put a cross between his eyes!

[–] titanicx@lemmy.zip 7 points 3 months ago

I mean honestly the whole white jesus thing aside, the cross between the eyes is actually kind of a cool artistic touch where she's playing with shadows and light essentially. Overall the whole subject matter is idiotic but hell take rich people's money why not.

[–] Almacca@aussie.zone 11 points 3 months ago (1 children)

his new year’s resolution was a wish for “peace on Earth”.

If anyone had the potential to actually bring that about, it's the President of the United States of America, but this fucker is full of too much hate and greed for that, and is doing the exact opposite.

Brett Ratner, director of Amazon’s forthcoming Melania documentary

Is it a porno?

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 2 points 3 months ago

shes telling how she is an archaelogist, and "dated a fossil"

[–] YiddishMcSquidish@lemmy.today 10 points 3 months ago (2 children)

A fucking picture of himself! Performative Christians really aren't good at seeing their own bat shit prophecies...

[–] NoForwadSlashS@piefed.social 5 points 3 months ago

Something something false idols

[–] HellsBelle@sh.itjust.works 4 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Check out that painting again on the website, then compare the two. You might be surprised. ;)

[–] YiddishMcSquidish@lemmy.today 3 points 3 months ago

Thanks for at least restoring what small amount of faith in humanity I steal have left.

[–] frongt@lemmy.zip 7 points 3 months ago (1 children)

It's not the worst painting I've ever seen, but I do note that he is depicted with blue eyes.

[–] HellsBelle@sh.itjust.works 10 points 3 months ago (1 children)

It's always a white Jesus with blue eyes for these people, even tho he likely had black hair, brown eyes and olive skin.

Heaven forbide they would worship the truth instead of their bias.

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 3 months ago

They wouldn't be Christians if they cared about the truth

[–] Bwaz@lemmy.world 5 points 3 months ago

Oh, sure. His wish is to take credit for peace, whether it exists or not. He couldn't care any less about actual peace.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 5 points 3 months ago

how sacrilegious.

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 3 months ago

This country is so fucking trashy

[–] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 4 points 3 months ago

Is that fucking Aileen Canon??

[–] Rhoeri@piefed.world 3 points 3 months ago

I’d imagine the Liberty Bell isn’t far behind.

I’m reclining ya, when resting bitch face becomes the new shocked face, there’s some trouble brewing.

[–] RizzRustbolt@lemmy.world 1 points 3 months ago

Looks like what's-her-face from Pluribus.
