Dam, were where you 4 hours ago. I gave up and just paid 3 bucks for the month so my wife doesnt freak out.
Thank you! We were literally getting up to go to bed early when I saw your reply. Made the night great!
Amazing, thank you!
I didn't realise they have unprotected streams 👀
usually cable channels lock down their streams pretty well, with CDN URLs that either expire or have a single-use token in them.
Yarr? Yarr!
Enshitification....
Local tv can still be received over antenna, even on modern, fancy TVs
So a caveat to this is that digital signal is absolutely shit compared to analog. Back when we had rabbit ears, even if the picture was fuzzy/suboptimal, you could watch the show just fine. Nowadays? If you're not getting 100% full strength signal, it is literally unwatchable. The audio and picture freeze every two seconds which makes it literally impossible to understand and follow dialogue. Either I get a crystal clear picture and audio or I get an unwatchable mess. There is no in between anymore with digital signal.
Plus, I only seem to get this crystal clear signal from the top floor in my home and near a window. If you have a lower floor or have the antenna a bit too far away from the window, it also just does not work hardly at all. This was never an issue with analog signal for me.
Idk if it's just me or not. There are a ton more channels overall with the digital signals compared to analog, but it's frustrating that I only seem to be able to watch them if the signal is absolutely perfect.
The "every 2 seconds" hit a chord with me. I hated antenna channels because of the glitching.
Turns out 4G & 5G cell phone signals cause interference. I added a filter in line with my antenna and most of the glitching went away. I still tuned the antenna for max signal strength, but there is enough error correction in ATSC that a signal strength of 75% or higher is stable for me.
But definitely look up that filter. It should really be standard kit. OTA sucked without it.
Very interesting. I had never really heard of this before. Thanks for the info. I'd try it out, but personally I don't watch much TV anymore tbh. It's all YouTube videos (ad free with ad blockers and modified apps) with very rarely some free streaming platforms thrown in there (PlutoTV, Tubi, etc.).
If you're not getting 100% full strength signal, it is literally unwatchable.
It depends... Sometimes it's terrible, while other times even low signal strength is fine. I only get around 65% signal strength and 75% signal quality for one channel (ABC, I think?), and it still works fine with no stuttering.
I use a HDHomeRun TV tuner, so I can place the antenna where I get the best signal, and the HDHomeRun transmits it over my LAN.
If you live far from the city center, you might just have to get an outdoor antenna. I used one for many years before moving into the city.
This happened to me with the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade this year. Thanks NBC.
We watched it through PlutoTV this year
Good idea
At least NBC is a broadcast station, so you can watch it for free using an antenna. I have an indoor antenna in my garage, connected to a HDHomeRun.
Ugh. I didn’t even think of the antenna! I tried my spectrum basic cable, and they weren’t broadcasting it there.
Whenever a special is on tv I run into issues as well. I saw they used to allow stream if you had HBO max account but just stopped in November because cnn wanted to go direct and let people pay them for monthly subscriptions now. I gave up looking and gave them the $3 for the month just to get it. I've pretty much used up all my free trials on all the live tv apps anyway. Not sure what you have but they still give you access if you have cable tv and can log in with the service provider account.
You don't have a digital air antenna?
CNN is not a broadcast network.
Even those are being locked down behind DRM now
