"[M]eeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”

A PieFed commuity dedicated to promoting sustainability and sustainable development.

For discussion of environmental, climate, clean energy, social, political, and individual action. A place for news, education, questions, and discussions.

Rules:

  1. Don't be a dick.
  2. If it fits an UN Sustainable Development Goal, it's probably welcome.
  3. Links to articles should leverage the original article title. Minor edits in [square brackets] for clarity/to reduce clickbait are probably fine.
  4. We all know corporations & governments are the main problem, and collective action + legislation is the best path forward. That said, someone needs to show support for a more sustainable market - to that end, discussion of individual action is encouraged, and "whatabout big oil" comments in posts about individual action may be removed with prejudice. You're not wrong, but see rule 1.

Not really a rule per se, more of a request: if the article has "Trump" or "Musk" in the title, consider posting it in a USA/Political community to help keep this space focused on sustainability over clickbait political headlines. Political posts are allowed, but discussion should prioritize policies over personalities.

We just take ours apart and put it back in the box. Pine smells nice but fake trees are so much more economical.

Our and all surrounding communities have a day set where you put the tree out. I think two. One for fast taker downers and also another for 3 kings day folks and as a backup for anyone who missed the first date. They send a truck with a woodchipper around and then all year give out free mulch on request (its also from tree trimmings and such). I was under the impression this kind of thing was really common even for rural communities.

Okay, reminds me of the show ‘Wild Harvest’

Just buy a live tree & use it as your holiday tree. When you do not want it as the holiday tree any more, simply put it outside, where it grows best, could leave in pot until has to be planted or plant right a way. Nothing says have use traditional holiday tree, especially if not Indigenous to your area. For many holidays now we have used the same non-traditional holiday tree, we used to call it our Charlie Brown holiday tree. When space becomes an issue we simply use a bunch of old & dried-up branches, instead the whole live tree. We have been doing this for a while, really not that hard to be better for our planet.

As kids we used to go around collecting them from the neighbors, make a nice pile, give it a light, then enjoy the 10 seconds of fun

If you have the space to do it safely...

  1. Hammer a piece of rebar into the ground, far from any structures or trees you care about.

  2. Drill a hole in the bottom of the tree trunk.

  3. Place the tree on the rebar. You now have a standing dead tree in your yard.

  4. Wait for a windless night.

  5. Get two hoses, and assistants to man them.

  6. Light the tree on fire.

  7. Stand back and watch a fantastic light show for approximately 8 minutes. Make sure your assistants spray any flyaway embers with the hoses.

Push it up deep in the chimney once dry, and light it up for a nice explosive firework.
