Self Improvement

484 readers
5 users here now

A community which focusses on improving yourself. This can be in many different ways - from improving physical health or appearance, to improving mental health, creating better habits, overcoming addictions, etc.

While material circumstances beyond our control do govern much of our daily lives, people do have agency and choices to make, whether that is as "simple" as disciplining yourself to not doomscroll, to as complex as recreating yourself to have many different hobbies and habits.

This is not a place where all we do is talk about improving "productivity" (in a workplace context) and similar terms and harmful lifestyles like "grindset". Self-improvement here is intended to make you a generally better and happier person, as well as a better communist, and any other roles you may have in your life.

Rules and guidelines:

  1. Posts should be about self-improvement. This is obviously a wide category, and can range from advice, to finding resources, to self-posts about needing to improve in a certain area, or how you have improved, and many other things.

  1. Use content warnings when discussing difficult subjects.

  1. Do not make medical decisions solely because of a discussion you have had with any person here (e.g. whether to take or not take medications; diagnoses; etc.) as we do not vet people. All medical problems should be discussed with a real-life medical professional.

  1. Do not post harmful advice here. If this is seen, then please report it and we shall remove it. If you are unsure about whether it's precisely harmful advice or not but feel uneasy about it, please report it anyway.

  1. Do not insult other users and their lifestyles or their habits (unless they ask, I suppose). This is a place for self-improvement. Critique and discussion about a course of action is encouraged over shit-flinging. Don't talk down to people.

I got a fair amount of reading done last week and just about finished with the 3rd year apprentice courses my online study offered so that's nice. This week I'll try finishing up and getting back to my reading for the year. Coming down with a bit of a cold so I'll see how much I can do and if I can even do plasma this week or not for some extra change.

Even though I caught a pretty nasty cold i managed to get some progress on my PhD application. I have my English-language certificate speaking exam tomorrow, so wish me luck!

Good luck with the PhD application! rat-salute

Nope. It was canceled without any refund or rescheduling because the Proctor said my Bluetooth keyboard, which I use because my laptop keyboard is broken, was not allowed and therefore to remove it from the room. Told them I needed it to complete the written section of the exam, and that regulations stated I could use a external keyboard. They answered that the keyboard had to be wired, because Bluetooth devices are banned.

Ran to try and get another keyboard, and by the time I came back the exam window had expired. Tried to fight it, but you know how brits are with brown people. Now I'm 300 bucks in the hole, with no language certificate, and a few days before the application deadline. Even if I had the cash I don't know if I could book an exam date close enough for me to get my results before the deadline. No PhD for me, I guess.

Sorry to be a bummer. Just venting, I guess. I'll remove it if it bothers anyone.

That's wild, I'm sorry to hear that. Post this in r/gradschool, maybe they will be able to help. If cash is an issue, ask in the mutual aid comm. Hopefully there's still time unity

This week I practiced meditation on 5 days in a row.

I'm on my vacation as of yesterday so I'm officially done with improvement for this year. Just want to rest and relax for the rest of this month. It's time for couch-maxxing comfy

I've been working really hard lately. I've recovered from injury and illness to get 4 classes of BJJ in as well as inching ever closer to the publishing of my open source project. Really good week in that respect, but I tend to have this moment of panic as a wake up which I wouldn't recommend. I can guarantee it's because I keep doing work during the weekends instead of doing something pleasant like hiking, being social, or indulging in the other small pleasures of life. But I feel so close to the accomplishments in the realms I feel very blessed to be able to do.
