It's a pay-what-you-want FOSS PC game based on Touhou Project… By which I mean it's got Reimu, Marisa, Youmu, Cirno, Yuyuko and the rest, so it is really for most intents and purposes just another Touhou game — just, a Touhou game not developed by Zun or given his explicit stamp of approval… But why should that matter, right?

You can get Taisei Project off Linux Mint's software manager and everything, or you can play it in your browser on the official website. This freaking rocks!! I mean it is incredibly difficult, but I knew it would be going in. I just think it's really cool that this exists.

How do you think Taisei Project compares with Zun's original games? Is "mainline" Touhou worth trying to get into? How would I go about playing those games on Linux?

This looks pretty cool! I'm a big touhou fan so I'd definitely say if you like this you'd like the mainline stuff.

I haven't tested extensively but I've played a few through wine just fine. That was a while ago though I'm sure there's better tech to run it with now.

The newer games are on Steam, older games can be found at Moriya Shrine (also the newer games if you want to pirate-jammin ).

I haven't tried every single old game but every one I have so far has worked with whatever defaults are installed with Lutris

Seems like you need an account confirmed by e-mail to download from that site? Hm.

There's already an infamously massive amount of Touhou fan games out there, possibly the most of any video game series ever made, so it probably doesn't.

Probably super easy these days at least when it comes to the newest ones, they're on Steam and Proton will most likely run them perfectly.

Well, I just got the impression that most Touhou fan games aren't actually trying to "be" Touhou as such, i.e. that most Touhou fan games aren't bullet hell games.

There are plenty of those too. The guidelines for Touhou fan content are very lax and if you're not asking for money, making a fan game like Taisei Project that's totally original content other than using the setting and characters isn't going to be a problem.
